The topic doesn't need to be exclusively an idea. For example, Arctic shrinkage is an event, but its also an idea because its a reason for believing global warming etc. ideas are usually but not always original ideas. 'voting' is an idea, but its hard to give anyone credit for it. jokes are ideas. 'schools of thought' are ideas that include lots of ideas. it is difficult to separate a thing (non-idea) from an idea. events, people, and locations are usually not ideas, but can be. For example, The Tiananmen Square 'tank man' is a person, but also serves to represent ideas, is referenced in arguments etc. The 'Great Leap Forward' was an event, but also an innovation, a decision greatly theorized, debated. a book may be an idea, but if possible, it is more ideal to model these things as an 'expression of an idea', with its ideas separate, using the original idea schema. That is, create a separate topic for "tank man's June 5, 1989 protest", and connect the person to it appropriately. Instead of saying the book 'the god delusion' is an idea (and an argument against the existence of god), it is better to create topics for the particular arguments the book uses, like 'the boeing 747 gambit', and map the book as an 'expression' of this idea. The distinction between an idea and an expression of an idea is extremely ambiguous. [ - ]
