- In this work, Mendelssohn developed the genre of the swift-moving scherzo (a playful musical movement) that he would use in the incidental music to "A Midsummer Night"s Dream" (1842). In the summer of 1825, Mendelssohn's father bought a house in Berlin. The city had become a cultural and musical center, and the house the most important salon in the community. Among the visitors were scientist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt and philosopher Hegel Inspired by Goethe's poetry, at 16 Mendelssohn composed the "String Octet op. 20 " in which he shows astonishing maturity. In 1826, he wrote his most popular work, the Overture to "A Midsummer Night"s Dream", op. 21, which had its first public performance in Stettin in early 1827.
