"None" is squatting on "Independent" -- please split this into two topics.

How about we just split off the "Political Party" section?
I now know how to use this handy little Split Tool here ...
-
That'd need someone to move the Wikipedia keys as well (which you won't be able to do), but it's a good start.
You'll probably want to use the dev version of the Split Tool, as there are a number of issues with the current released version. Note that the new version actually does the write for you, rather than expecting you to copy it into the Query Editor!
-
Thanks. I just used the dev version of the Split Tool and split off the "Political Party" section to a new "Independent" topic. It seems to have mostly worked, in that the new Independent political party has a lot of politicians, and those politicians now show their party as Independent; however, they're also still listed under "None" here ...
Could someone please move over the Wikipedia keys to the new topic?
-
My mistake (think I was looking at a cached version) - "None" is no longer a political party and has no candidates.
-
Looks good to me. Could somebody with appropriate privileges please move the Wikipedia keys? (and possibly the /en key as well).
-
Cross-posting to /freebase in the hope the admins there may action this.

(From Jamie Taylor, via email):
I'm very hesitant to suggest splitting the semantics of WP keys since the source (WP) treats them all as equivalent (i.e., all keys are opaque - splitting them makes an assumption that there is a specific semantic associated with each.)
By splitting the key set we are assuming that WP contributors are making a distinction between keys and that they make a specific selection among all the keys for use in Infoboxes, etc. WP contributor don't actually see the full collection of "keys" referring to an article - and thus will use whatever the current canonical name of the article is - thus our attribution of a special semantic to each key is probably a bad assumption.
I think it is great that we are splitting a topic - but I don't think we can separate keys from an external sources when the external source does not recognize the difference between keys. -
I would normally agree completely with this. Topic Updater does not like wikipedia keys to be split between topics; in fact, the enw version would automatically "fix" these splits if we did not put special logic in to not overwrite manual key swaps.
However, this looks like a special case. For some reason, the wikipedia keys for the Independent Party got merged into the uber-topic (or black hole, depending on your viewpoint) "None". AFAIK, there is no reason that "None" should have any wikipedia keys at all.
+1 on the split, and moving all wikipedia keys for the Independent Party on to the split topic. We'll make it happen today. -
Precisely. We're just trying to unpick the merge which happened on the 7th April; there is no "external source" which thinks that "Independent" is the same as "None".
Here's a question for anyone interested: why did Merge Bot decide to merge the two? As far as I can see, it was due to this duplicate collection, which led to this merge task, which got two "don't merge" votes. So what's merge bot doing here?
-
My icon shows up next to the "status completed" line in the history, so it's likely that I voted for the merge as admin, but there's no record of the admin vote that I can find. My rationale was presumably that the "independent" political party is equivalent to "none" -- that is, it's not a political party at all, it's just the conventional way that "none-ness" is expressed for politicians' party affiliation.

Hey, just wanted to say this base is looking awesome. I noticed you loading a bunch of data lately (you showed up on my report of most active users in fact) so I came to take a look, and I'm really impressed. Can we help out in any way?
-
Thank you very much for the compliments...I am o.k. at the moment.
Just one question: Is there a possiblity to get statistics of the base. In the past I used google analytics for another project. The problem is, I have to paste some lines into the website-code...mmhhhh?
-
Hi there, I have a question. During the last weeks you changed some things on the view options of freebase-topics. This really looks good to me. But, I wonder about different detail levels of the topics. For example:
The first page of the Albert-Einstein-topic(http://www.freebase.com/view/en/albert_einstein/-/base/jewli) shows a lot of facts from different types.
In contrast to this e.g.the Adolph Frank topic (http://www.freebase.com/view/en/adolph_frank/-/base/jewlib)only shows the summary in browse-mode.
Is this just a bug?
I ask because on jewlib-base (http://jewlib.freebase.com) we have a lot of data without summaries at the moment. In this context, It seems unpractical to me to change to "edi-mode" to get the facts we entered during the last months, like here:
http://www.freebase.com/view/guid/9202a8c04000641f800000000c38cd12/-/base/jewlib
or here:
http://www.freebase.com/edit/topic/guid/9202a8c04000641f800000000c38ef9a?domain=%2Fbase%2Fjewlib
I hope you understand what I mean,
best regards,
Frank
-
Teething pains my friend, we are rolling out this 'New Look' for many templates, Consumer Page being the very first.
Look here on sandbox, which is running the upcoming code release for next week:
http://www.sandbox-freebase.com/view/en/adolph_frank/-/base/jewlib
I think Adolph is looking a bit better there.
-
Hi there,
I have a further question: Do you plan to show the weblinks on the first page? I just ask because, e.g. an archival finding aid topic without a weblink to the online finding aid, like
http://www.sandbox-freebase.com/view/guid/9202a8c04000641f800000000c3857d9/-/base/jewlib
is confusing for a user. The weblink only appears in "edit-mode" here. I think these are also "teething pains". Am I right?
best regards,
f.
-
I saw that there are already some archival finding aid topic which show the link in the upper center. Great!!!!
-
Yup, more "teething pains." Web links are being worked on now and will definitely be part of the page... likely more prominent too.
-
Yes indeed, Adolph is looking much better in the sandbox ;)
Thanks for the quick answer,
f.

hey, i'm throwing together a schema to connect events to their news-articles,
http://newsevents.freebase.com/type/schema/base/newsevents/news_report
would love your input
cheers
-
I think this is a great idea but would lean toward a standard type that includes "Written work" and all its properties (e.g., news article name, authors, publication date).
-
Nice idea
@spatialed, the report might be broadcast on the radio, TV, podcast, internet stream etc. etc..
@spencermountain, the news-report CVT expects a report to be published on the internet somewhere (implied by the URI property). It might be better to make 'news-report' a standard type, not a CVT. That way, if it was a written work, television segment, podcast or a broadcast it could be co-typed as such.
Also, you might want a property on news-report for reporter (expecting a new type called 'news reporter', co-typed with person).
-
Right, electronic media should be included, so agree that written work is not appropriate. Most of these news reports should have names though, so a standard type is still the way to go IMO. I'm a little concerned about denormalization with the reporter property. Might be a good idea to make a sub-group of news report types that include your common news report properties and are co-typed with relevant media types (e.g., written news report, electronic news report).
-
my intention was to toss in a buch of newspaper urls used as references in wikipedia articles. this would be much more awkward to do if each newsreport was its own topic.
you guys are admins, ed, i turned it into a stanard display for now, so throw together those sub-group types if you woud like - but i dont know if i'd be able to make this data topic-friendly, like : 'North Korea's nuclear test raises tension article in sanfransisco bay chronicle' ah, it'd get messy.
the 'to cvt or not cvt' dilemma is so unfortunate sometimes. maybe i could just import as a cvt and optionally refactor it somehow after.
-
Yeah, in retrospect your CVT approach sounds like a good way to get data in. More complex standard schema could be created later...
-
The whole CVT/standard type thing depends on a few questions:
- How do we do an aggregated/affiliated news report, e.g. sourced from Reuters and repeated in a thousand newspapers worldwide?
- Is a report in different media counted as a seperate report (e.g. an article on New York Times website counted as a different article from the one in the paper, even though the words are the same?)
- Are we trying to model just reports of news stories, or are we trying to dissect all the contents of newspapers? - i.e. also model opinion columns and the lifestyle section?

nope. that'll be something else on Newspaper Issue (hopefully)

Hey pumpkin, we're hoping to feature this base on the Freebase homepage this week. I'm cleaning up a little just to make it look slick for the screenshot, and we've got a data entry person working on adding comp sci books and filling out more information about Turing Award winners. Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to do before we publicise this base, or if you have any questions.

Hi all,
Congrats about a great product your building here, it
couldwill change the way we find information online. I'll definetly be spreading the word about it over here in the UK dont you worry! and I'm certainly pretty excited to see how it evolves over time.While playing around, I've noticed that the RSS Feed for my profile page doesnt seem to be working:
http://www.freebase.com/feed/newsfeed/profile/user/simonturner
Be handy to have. Is this a one of bug, or is it something thats a work in progress? Also I had a little trouble tracking down the Freebase Discussion Forum and actually had to resort to a google search lol. How do you normally browse to it, just wondering if it should be a little more prominent.
My Exercises base is comming along nicely, but there's still lots to do. I've pretty much tapped into all the data that was fead in from Wikipedia, so the next step is going to be to start created some fresh content.
Cheers,
Simon

The search engine output from Freebase is a bit messy for "Angelina Jolie" but I dont know why... Just try "Angelina Jolie" you ll see the problem immidiately.
-
Can you be more specific? The autocomplete in Freebase for Angelina Jolie seems fine, and typing the name in and hitting Search to get the search results also looks fine. Did you get results you didn’t expect, or was the formatting of the results screwy? Thanks in advance for any additional information you can provide.
-
Someone corrected it, but I swear it was there.
It looked a bit messy, like if in the profession someone had added some MQL requests. Looks more like a bug to me, than injection...
-
If you have logs, or something like that, you wont miss it. The profile was fine, but if you typed the request in the search, at the end of the description, there was some MQL weird stuff ...
-
I saw the previous version of the search results. The topic description for Angelina Jolie showed the old description that was crawled from Wikipedia and you could see some of the wikicode from the info_box. Shortly after that, someone wrote a new description on the Angelina Jolie page but it took a couple days until the index was updated to the new description showed up in the search results.

When an actor has appeared regularly in more than six seasons of a show, they don't all show up automatically, only the first six show up, you have to press More to see the rest. But this means when you edit them, only the first six appear in the edit box, the others aren't visible. eg. Stargate SG-1 for Richard Dean Anderson
-
It also appears to be a problem on the actor, character and season pages (and presumably any more where they appear), except in those cases, no More button is available, but if you go to Stargate SG-1 Season 8 for example, Richard Dean Anderson is in that season, but on the list he's no in season 7, but if you go to season 7, season 8 isn't listed, if you get my drift.
-
Oooh, that is a problem. I'll report a bug in our internal tracking. Thanks for letting us know.
-
This bug is still around, and makes editing TV shows terribly annoying.
-
It’s correct that this hasn’t been fixed yet. It involves a redesign of part of the client view, so it may take a little while.
However, our bug tracking system is now public; you can follow this one as CLI-5472, vote for it and/or add it to your watch list.

I wrote a perl script to fetch article and image from freebase but seems API has some bug:
my query is :
to retrive result for 'blood cancer' but the result is nothing
same query works for 'cervical cancer' but dosn't work for 'skin cancer' too
both of 'cervical cancer' and 'blood cancer' articles and content exist when is search in website
what's wrong?
actual query :
[
{
"/common/topic/article" : [
{
"id" : null
}
],
"/common/topic/image" : [
{
"id" : null
}
],
"guid" : null,
"name" : "blood cancer",
"type" : "/medicine/disease"
}
]-
There are two separate problems you are running into here.
First, I do not see a topic for blood cancer. A search turns up a few results about leukemia, which have the words “blood” and “cancer” in their Wikipedia articles, but there does not appear to be a topic with that actual name.
The reason your query is not working for skin cancer is that you are requiring the topics to have articles and images. The skin cancer topic has no images, so the query fails.
When you want a query to return results even if some of the interesting properties are not present, use the optional constraint:
"/common/topic/image":[{"id":null,"optional":true}]

Thanks for bringing this up. The data format for blurbs changed, and a piece of the API was overlooked. It should be fixed soon; stay tuned for more information.
-
Hi Hemang.
A recent data update seems to have caused the problem. We are working on resolving that as soon as possible. In the meanwhile if you are running this specific query for wikipedia articles only (i.e. not in a generic library or something of that sort), you can get the same content by using the /api/tran/blurb service with a very hign number for maxlength like so:
http://www.freebase.com/api/trans/blurb/%239202a8c04000641f8000000000acd66c?maxlength=3000
This will only work for wikipedia based topics. The reason being that we do not maintain the complete wikipedia article on our backend. However we do allow /api/trans/raw requests for wikipedia based topics, it simply returns the same content as the blurbs without truncating the content.

Sometimes a company in Freebase has two cities in the HQ address area when it really doesn't. If the second city is correct, and you delete the first address line, and then try to add information into the remaining line, the autofill fields won't work. You can type things in there, but the auto-suggest won't "open" and you can't link the field to an actual topic. You have to close out and then go back in.
In case that is confusing :) here's hopefully something that will help:
Company XYZ
Company/Headquarters "field"
Line 1 = Paris
Line 2 = London
Go in and delete Paris. Then try to fill in the other address fields for the London line. the fields that link to other topics won't work.

Would it be useful to have a data mob start/end date? It would be cool to plot data mobs like MDOs:

We downloaded the films data dump, and found that the value of the netflix ID wasn't present in the films.tsv, even though it appeared as a column in the first row. Any reason for this? Is there any way we can get the netflix ID?
-
The Netflix IDs have been added and updated extensively since the data dump. I would recommend going to filter view (http://www.freebase.com/view/film/film), adding all the columns from the left that you want, including the Netflix ID, and then "Use these results" --> "Save as TSV/CSV" to produce your own version of the latest film data. Please post if you have trouble doing this.
-
So, would this mean that there could be the possibility of certain values being updated, that may not be reflected in the dump? Is there any way of getting this delta as well?
-
The best way to pick up deltas between data dumps would be by using our API; this would be very easy for the case you mention, simply getting Netflix IDs for any that have gained them since the last dump. See our help section for API help.
-
Another way to detect recent changes is to monitor the RSS feed of the history for that type. For example, the Film type history feed is:
http://www.freebase.com/feed/history/all/film/film
This will notify you as soon as someone adds a new film, changes an existing film or deletes a film.

This isn't necessarily a bug, but how can you remove the value in the Gender field from the Person type?
For example, I want to remove the Person type from the Bass Brothers topic, but I need to remove the "Male" from the Gender. But I can't figure out how to do that.
If I clear out the value, it wants me to pick something from the list. I cleared the value and then quickly hit enter, but I don't think the form likes that option as it keeps the value pick list open even when the box is closed :) [of course that disappears as soon as I leave the page]
Is there a way to allow someone to blank out a field for cases like this?
-
Why do you need to remove "Male" from Gender before removing the type? That's not necessary. You can remove the type without clearing the gender first.
-
Oh, good to know. I assumed I had to disassociate all the values before removing the type or there could be a value/space/whatever left hanging on the other end.
-
Well... detyping a type from a topic is not necessarily "clean". If a topic is erronously typed with property values, the cleanest way is to detype is to remove all the property values first and then detype the type. Otherwise, you get property artifacts left behind (the link between the topic and the property/value is not unlinked). As an example. see my topic on sandbox - I typed myself as a location, added a containment, then detyped without removing property values.
We're trying to get clean detyping functionality into the client soon, as well as have backend validators run periodically. However, in the meantime, I advocate removing property values first before detyping.
-
I guess it depends on if the property value is linked with another topic? So it probably doesn't matter for date of birth, but does for employer.
Not sure where gender falls into it, but the problem with removing the value is seems to want a value and there's no obvious way to remove it.
-
Ah, the enumerated type is trying to "force" you to pick a choice. What I do to remove the value is delete the current text in the edit popup, wait for the popup choices appear, then click off of the edit popup. The popup choices will disappear and then you can click save and the value will be disconnected. Definitely not desired functionality - I'll bring it up with client design.
As for removing values, it applies for all properties.

When you import a list of episodes to a tv series or season, once you've reconciled all of the episodes, on the next page it says the episodes will be reconciled with existing episode etc., but all the episode numbers are going to be created as new topics. And on the next page, it says they've been created, and the links go back to the home page.
-
It also seems that when one imports a list of episodes to a season, only existing episodes save the episode number, if you add a new episode, the episode numbers appear to be deleted. And when you import episodes to a TV series, none of the episode numbers are saved.
-
It looks like there are two problems here: one an unclear UI, and the other an actual possible bug.
The bit about creating episode numbers as new is because the episode numbers are just text values, not actual topics; the “1” for the first episode is not going to be reconciled with an existing topic called “1.” The UI should be clearer about what is happening with text and number values, however.
The bit about the episode numbers not taking is a real problem.
I will add both of these issues to our bug tracking system.

I was noticing that there are a lot of topics that could be typed as type/domain equivalent topics so I went through and added as many as I could find.
Now I would like to set the equivalent types for those topics but Freebase tells me that I don't have permission. Is it possible for me to get that permission or do I need one of the admins make the changes for me?
-
That kind of change depends on the rights of the type itself, so only those that can edit the type can set a type equivalent.
If you post the list—or submit it as a feedback comment—one of our admins can vet the list and use an internal tool with global access rights to make the change. That seems easier than contacting the owners of every type…
-
Here is the data and query template for the type/domain equivalent topics that I would like to add to Freebase.
Thanks for helping me with this.
-
This is set up on sandbox now. I am going to e-mail the data-modeling mailing list to see if there are any type maintainers who object.
The types in the /type namespace failed, as they should; this shouldn’t really be applied to them. There’s also one bug in your file; the third column for “Chemical Compound” isn’t an ID.
-
Now time for me to nitpick on behalf of some of my types.
Why is Constitutional Convention equivalent to Election? That’s wrong.
I don’t think a Musician is equivalent to a Musical Artist; a musical artist may be a band or a DJ. Recording artist would be a better equivalent, but there isn’t really a topic for that notion in Freebase.
Otherwise, all of the domains for which I’m an administrator look good.
-
Sorry about Constitutional Convention, I was using the List Import Tool and it automatically merged a lot of topics that it shouldn't have. I guess I missed that one.
I agree with you on Musical Artist, I overlooked the fact that it is a broader term than Musician. For now, its probably safe to just leave it out but at some point in the future I'd like to tie some of these topics to UMBEL subject concepts so that the "Musical Artist" type would be equivalent to a "Musical Performer" topic which would map to what they call the "MusicPerformanceAgent" subject concept.

People are adding bands, tv shows and things like Wikipedia to the Influence domain (which is intended to be restricted to people), which adds the included type 'people' to things that are obviously not people. I'm not policing the domain rigorously, and you're going to end up with junky data. You could have something like a message:
"Wikipedia" is not yet typed as a person (required by Influence Node). Do you want to continue and add Wikipedia as a person?
-

-
It doesn't seem like there's any way to edit a topic with the redirect co-type.
I'm guessing there may be some kind of URL param I can enter to avoid the redirect?
-
What are you trying to do? The Redirect type (/freebase/redirect), like most types in the Freebase domain, is a special type, used in the UI, and its instances shouldn't be editable by most users. But there are only four instances of the type, and I assume that you're not trying to edit the home page, so I'm probably missing something.
-
I accidentally assigned a co-type to the Freebase developers page, and not even on the sandbox :(
However, even trying to access the new instance result in a redirect, so I have no way of removing the type, at least through the GUI. -
I've removed the type /proficiency from the developers page. There really isn't a way to do this with the UI, so bringing it up here was a good choice.

Hello,
Could you please inform me who are the authors or creator of freebase.
Also are there any organisations financing freebase ?
If so, who are they ?
Thank you-
Hi, Vincent.
Freebase is a product of Metaweb, a private company in San Francisco. You can find a link to Metaweb in the lower right corner of almost every page on Freebase (click the "Powered by Metaweb" logo).
You can also find info via the Metaweb topic in Freebase:

Since we have a Metaweb Application type, could we also have a Metaweb Framework type (or Module, Library etc.) to include frameworks, libraries, modules etc. that users have created to access Metaweb.
I imagine we'd need the same fields as a the Metaweb Application type, with the addition of a Used By property to link to any 'Metaweb Application' instances that use this framework (this should probably be symetrical with a 'Uses' property in Metaweb Application - if everyone agrees). Any further information should probably be added using a more generic framework/module/library type (we don't have one yet, but I'm sure we could).
I've created and published this as a type (http://freebase.com/view/filter?id=%2Fuser%2Fhds%2Fdefault_domain%2Fmetaweb_framework), to give everyone the idea.
