Welcome, and some information about Freebase

  1.
    1. Hi bcmoney, and welcome to Freebase.  I see you've been very busy since you got here, but I'm concerned that you seem to be using Freebase in a way that's not exactly as intended.

Freebase is a structured database of all kinds of information.  It's a collection of topics (things) which are grouped together into types, eg. video games, film directors, or museums.  Each of those types has associated properties or attributes (eg "films directed" for film director), which we encourage our community to fill out to create a full, rich database for anyone to use.

When you create a domain on Freebase, the information you add to it -- topics, types, and so on -- affects the data out in the "Freebase commons", which everyone shares.  Therefore, it's important for you to use Freebase properly.

Crism has already left a couple of comments on your user profile asking you about the types in your Mobile TV domain.  Please let him/us know if you are doing something abstract as he suggests; if it is simply a misunderstanding, or we don't hear back form you, we'll come clean up shortly.

Meanwhile, you might find our Help system, especially What are domains, types, topics and properties? to be useful.

      1. Hi skud,

I am reviewing my entries now and attempting to clean-up...

The MobileTV domain still seems valid to me though, as it describes mobile video services delivered to a Mobile phone or other portable media player.

Think of it as the Mobile little brother to the TV domain. Many companies (especially overseas in Japan & South Korea, for example) are already creating Mobile-specific TV programming, or even by times shortening existing episodes and newscasts into "Mobisodes".

I would like to describe this phenomenon in a very public and transparent manner, which is why I've chosen Freebase as a trustworthy source for mapping the domain.

Especially because companies in North America are now packaging supposed "Mobile TV" services for an added monthly fee, which is why I feel that it is of the utmost importance to create a new public domain within Freebase which describes what exactly Mobile TV REALLY is. I hope this fits the free definition of knowledge domains that Freebase is doing such a spectacular job of promoting.

This community has really impressed me, and I hope that I can contribute as opposed to deteriorate the quality of the structured database.

Re-reading the Help System and then cleaning up...
        Thanks.

      2. I think using Freebase to describe and catalogue mobile TV services is a great idea!  We'd love to support you in doing this.

Your types such as Mobile TV Format and Mobile TV Transmission Method are looking much better now.  Good work!  Though your Consumer and Provider types actually look like they should be called something like "Mobile TV Consumer type" and "Mobile TV Provider type" -- as in, a public company is a *type* of mobile tv provider, not actually a mobile tv provider.  Where are you modeling the actual providers?  Is that the Network?

      3. Yeah, I see what you mean... I'll fix that now. You're right, I think Network is the best place for modeling the actual providers themselves, with a link to the mobile-accessible page where "Consumers" could either view the service immediately or subscribe/find more info on how to receive the service.

Thanks for your help and patience, will do my best on doing this domain (and any others I can contribute to) justice!
