How did the NAICS code 519130 (Internet Publishing and Broadcasting and Web Search Portals) get merged with The Internet?  In my mind these are clearly separate topics.

If you agree, then I'll flag for split and we can add recategorizing the companies under this Industry to the To Do Lists.

I would certainly agree that they are separate things and needs to be split. NAICS is a key system of codes and those codes should correlate to other related topics, such as The Internet, web search portals, Internet publishing, Internet game sites, etc.

I'm just wondering how to handle all the "Corresponding Index Entries" themselves: http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/sssd/naics/naicsrch?code=518210&search=2007%20NAICS%20Search Should they all be children of 518210 ? Their not necessarily aliases, but reference entities perhaps?, which some are Freebase topics themselves, such as Web hosting (as listed in the NAICS index) VERSUS the Freebase entity Web hosting service, which I would say that correlate somehow to NAICS code 518210.

So how to correlate those Index Entries also needs to be decided as well. Either with Child property, or use Subject_of ? Or create another property on /industry ? I'm not sure exactly how to best handle the correlation.

What can sometimes be confusing is that either 519130 or 518210 could be used for You Tube or Pandora Radio. If you read and look at NAICS and those Corresponding Index Entries.

              For example,

Pandora Radio could be under both: 518210 Media streaming service AND 519130 Internet radio station

You Tube could be under both : 519130 Video broadcasting, exclusively on Internet AND 518210 Video and audio streaming services

As far as I understand it, the NAICS code is 51820. The Index Entries are example types that are associated with 51820. The idea for NAICS and Industry is not to get too specific, otherwise where do you draw the line - pretty soon few things are not in themselves an industry (think about detailed you can get with software categories!). Now, we can change our mind on Industry, but that's been the goal so far.

And companies can very easily have more than one NAICS code. I know when I worked with D&B SICs, there were several codes listed, but one was designated the primary (and it wasn't always great, but that's the problem you have, esp with diverse companies).

As for YouTube, I'd say 518210 based on this comment in the other code: Providing streaming services on content owned by others--are classified in Industry 518210, Data Processing, Hosting, and Related Services. I guess, who owns the video, which is a whole other debate for youtube :)

Note that the comments at the top of the NAICS page are very helpful to get the "general idea" of the code, like above. It isn't always straightforward, esp with internet categories, but it usually gives you a hint to what it is trying to capture. Or it may be because of my background using SIC :)

Renamed "Internet" to "The Internet".  Normally, articles (the part of speech) provide no additional information and are excluded from Freebase names.  In this case, the article serves to distinguish between the global internetwork know as "The Internet" and other internetworks (such as isolated miltary and intelligence internets).

OK, but I've gone and added an alias, "Internet".  It's usually a good idea to put the old name as an alias whenever renaming occurs.

Sometimes the article goes at the end separate by a comma too, so things collate "properly," but I thought the Freebase standard was no articles and that the Freebase way of distinguising multiple things of the same name was by type and properties.

When the ARPAnet was split and then gateway to the MILnet there was only one internetwork, but now that there are multiple internets, plus the internetwork (internet for short) type of network, why not just create as many as you need and type them appropriately?
