Hi flipmozart.
I noticed you created a few new Industries: chemicals, chemicals, agriculture, and seeds. Please be aware that the Industry value under Company is linked to Topics. There are thousands of existing Topics that are already flagged as Industry, including "Chemical Industry", "Agriculture" and "Seed". I therefore flagged your new Topics to merge with the existing Topics.

Sure. Go ahead. I think there's a browser issue/problem. When I use IE 6, the AJAX script can't seem to fetch the list of existing industries (or any field for that matter). I was therefore forced to create new ones just to enter data. Now, I know better. I'm using Firefox. Just FYI.
-
Well that would do it!
No, IE 6 doesn't play nicely with Freebase. Luckily Firefox is a good browser to use anyway, so hopefully it is not too much trouble.
Thanks for the explanation...now I know you're not a total n00b :)

Hehehe... did I say AJAX? Anyway, I'd like to do a bulk upload from a relational database of employees of and books published by our organization (IRRI). Do have any advice, pointers, gotchas you might want to share (other than those in the FAQ)?
I notice in the BOOK topic there is no ISBN, while there is an ISSN for periodicals. In this day and age, that seems a serious omission. Hmmm... can this be remedied?
Thanks again!

The ISBN property is on the Book Edition type. There's lots of documentation about the book schemata here: Entering Data for a Book.

flipmozart, with regard to the load from your database... can you tell me a bit more about it? How many books, for example? We may be able to help you load them. Or, if you are comfortable doing so, you could use our API.
-
Hi skud,
Well, our organization (IRRI) has published around a thousand books and some 300 of that are available online at Google books (http://books.irri.org). Also, our library has one of the largest collection of literature on rice (more than 100,000 catalog entries) in the world.
Right now, we're trying to find a way to make it easier for researchers to navigate our collection.
Google books is nice for online viewing, but we're not too sure how far it goes in terms of supporting cross-references to other works, letting people (readers) add annotation or comments, etc.
What do you think?
P.S. I tried out your API, but I found it a bit too difficult to use. Don't you have some facility where we simply format our "catalog" relational database in a certain way, and then push a button to upload it? Sorry, am I asking for too much? Hehehe...
What do you think?
-
Yes, I agree that the API is pretty advanced.
We're planning an upload service like you mention, but it's not there yet. We have a person who can help load the database you already have, though, if you're interested. Why don't you email me (kirrily@metaweb.com) and I'll put you in touch with him.

Hi again,
It's almost a year since our last discussion and I'm pleased to see the many improvements in Freebase. I'd like to know if there's any new development as far as bulk loading data is concerned.
Many thanks!

Flip, I noticed you added "Rice", "Science" and "Agriculture" as genres for this book. I've removed "Rice" and "Agriculture" as they are more subjects and not genres. You can look at our existing list of genres to get an idea of what is a genre and what's not. A good guideline is, if you were to walk into a large bookstore like Borders, would you find a section with a sign above it with that label? Yes, you would find a section about "Science", but probably not about "Rice".
-
Okay... does every topic have some "guideline" page?
-
Most types should, but the amount of detail varies (you can get to it from a topic by clicking "more options" and selecting "view more like this". You can also click on the "?" icon when editing a property for help about that specific property.
-
Okay, thanks for that. I'll try and read up on these before creating new types....
