          geolocations

            Hi Jamie,

I did a search on the geocode_bot on fb and saw that you were the operator for a number of mass data ops to geocode locations last year.

I was wondering if you know who to talk to about getting the bot to run on a specific base. We have a base called Bioventurist and would like to get some latitude and longitude values for the geolocation property of type /base/bioventurist/science_or_technology_company. We are trying to create a map using the Google Maps API and the headquarters of companies from this type. Some companies do have lat/long values, but many others do not, and using the Google geocoder to create lat/longs dynamically is resulting in extremely slow load times.

Any help you could provide would be much appreciated.

            Best,

            Robert Warren

              Hi Robert,

I can probably help you out a little here, though I'll also make sure to bring this to Jamie's attention.

The geobot runs round finding topics who have an address, but no lat/long, and sets the lat/long so that they can be mapped.  I see that your science_or_technology_company includes the type /business/company (yay!), so what you have to do is enter data in the "Headquarters" property, giving a full address, and then geobot will find the lat/long for them.

You might want to go to the settings for your Bioventurist base and choose "Show properties from the Commons", or else you could delegate/borrow the "Headquarters" property from /business/company if you preferred.

               K.

              Robert -

The geocoder bot is currently run once a week.  It should be attempting to geolocate *any* topic that has a mailing address in the US.  If you are finding topics where the mailing address property is more than a week old, it is probably the case that our Tiger based geocoder can't properly locate the topic.

Big thanks to you both for getting back to me. Apologies for the tardy response on my end.

The fact that you are using a Tiger based geocoder explains why we are missing geolocation values for a large number of companies in the bv base. This is likely due to companies headquarters being situated outside North America, incomplete address input on our end, or a combination of the two.

Do either of you know if it possible to use a mql write query to input lat/long values for non-North American companies?

               Best,

              Rob

            Hi Jamie,

I see you're doing some work around sailing vessels. I've been adding types related to tall ships and related subjects. We should chat!

I'm quite new here, and not entirely sure how developed this comment system is and whether it's a good place to chat, but please feel free to email me at skud@infotrope.net.

            Jamie,
With the current selection of types, the CSS topic will remain an orphan. Do you think somebody on your side could create a type for Web Development , or something along these lines - other than Programming Languages? Thank you for the freebase!

            Jamie,
A topic called CSS (Cascading style sheets) is an orphan with the current selection of types. Do you think somebody on your side create a type, other than Programming Languages? I understand, that a dedicated type for Stylesheet Languages might be an overkill, so maybe Web Development?
