Hi Skud,
I created a type for Jewish Communities a few days ago. I would like to merge the existing "history of the Jews in"-topics, which are dealing with villages or towns whith existing Jewish Community topics. Or I will just rename and type them appropriatly. Is it possible to revert the existing votes on specific Jewish communities, like Prague, Laupheim etc.
best regards,
Frank
-
What would merging the topics give you? The topics I flagged for deletion were untyped, so they have no properties. I'm not sure merging would "History of Jews in X" with "X Jewish Community" is right, and I have to admit I'm a bit dubious of "X Jewish Community" as a topic at all. Would we also create "X Catholic Community", "X secular community", and the like? I see you have included the type "Religious Organization" but that's more usually used for formal organisations than people with a certain faith in a certain geographic area. Eg. the Union for Traditional Judaism or United Synagogue Youth. Though they don't all appear to be correctly imported and typed and have their religion property set correctly, there's a good list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Jewish_organizations
-
Hi,
As I learned, Jewish communities are organized as public corporations (like Jewish Community of Berlin: http://www.jg-berlin.org/en/about-us/organisational-structure.html). The "problem" with "Jewish Communities" at all is that the term of the religious jurisdiction and the organization are identical. (mmmh?!) I will add the religion property associated_with as soon as possible.
best regards,
f

kirilly, on nov 3 you flaged a bunch of 'histpry of' topics that i dont think should be deleted. 'history of' topics are at the least, /book/booksubjects
-
Spencer, we've been over this multiple times. If that's a book topic then so is "Opinions on the media coverage of the weather in Melbourne on the day of Kirrily Robert's birth". If you're tempted to put "X of Y" as a book subject, you should instead put "X" and "Y". I.e. the books in question should have the subjects "History" and "Judaism" and probably "Prague" or whatever the place in question is. That way people who query for:
- History of Jews in Prague (i.e. subject = History + Judaism + Prague)
- History of Judaism (History + Judaism)
- Judaism in Prague (Judaism + Prague)
- History of Prague (History + Prague)
- History
- Prague
- Judaism
... will all find the book in question. If "X of Y" is the subject, then all of that breaks.
-
FYI, I've made a wiki page on the subject of subjects, here: http://wiki.freebase.com/wiki/Subject
-
I really like your wiki!

f.

I'd like to request to add properties to Legal Case to capture a case's judge(s) and their opinions on the case. Higher courts have multiple judges and the final verdict is by vote of majority from all the member judges. It would be good to reciprocate case data from the Judge type.
-
+1, though it shouldnt be here. this type is for civil cases (right skud?). I've made a general 'legal case' here, please recip it

how bout 'type of treaty'? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Treaties_by_topic

Can you fill in some distinguishing characteristics please, so we can figure out if it's the same ship as this one? Thanks!

I'd like to add types for allotments and community gardens. Could I be added as an Admin?

Might it make sense to rename this Base to Local food, or something like that? It would also be good to have a Farmer's market type that lists the businesses that sell there.

skud - could the project budget be vertical list to allow tracking of a budget over time?
Also, could the project participation have From and To date properties? This would allow me to note participants who left before completion or were brought in later on in a project.
Thanks
-
Also estimated completion date should be a vertical list, to show how a project deadline changes as work progresses.
-
Bumping this thread. To expand on this a little more. I think the expected type of planned completion date should be a CVT, dated date. I'd like to capture project deadline slippages - as an example see Sydney Opera House (or just about any construction project!)

for deletion of self created topics in error to be self deletable?
it seems the guys at http://www.freebase.com/view/user/uoa_it/uoa_it are making a base and flagging their own topics as they sort it out. Given the absence of data to support or argue against deletion I suspect some people vote not because they seem "valid". Let's clear the queue of these things and let skilled topic creators clean it up themselves.
In the meantime the users should post discussions on their flagged topics to tell us why to delete (since the community is naturally and rightfully loathe to do so).
j
-
Is there a way to see a list of all topics within a certain domain which are marked for deletion? Would then a simple comment in the discussion (e.g. "created by mistake" or "not needed anymore") make the deletion process easier? btw, all we can do when we want to delete a topic is flag it, right? or what did you mean by "let skilled topic creators clean it up themselves"? Thanks, Christian
-
Hi Christian- yes you are doing all you can by flagging. I'm hoping to give domain admins and perhaps users a little more control to avoid a review process. I'll turf you to Kirrily (user skud), our community manager - perhaps she can help. But in the meantime, a comment like you mention would avoid people voting to keep what looks valid lacking any other input.
thanks!

i suggested this before this type got promoted, but it got fanned over somewhere,
we definetly definetly should merge this type with this one, which already has tons of data, and it seems has been overlooked.
-
I agree somewhat. Funny, I just posted my Need to expand beyond just followers. And THEN, I read your post here. LOL. However your suggestion is fairly comprehensive. I was thinking more along the lines of what I suggested, since not all followers necessarily are orthodox (strict followers), so a quick selection drop down might be a better approach and cover a broader use? I thinking on just the basics as shown in this table ... http://asiarecipe.com/religion.html
X - prohibited or strongly discouraged A - avoided by the most devout R - some restrictions regarding types of foods or when foods are eaten O - permitted, but may be avoided at some observances
Anyone else ? Let's get this merged somehow. I need it somewhat and I'm sure others do as well. Put it to a vote.

Why is the Employer type included by default, can I ask for the reasoning behind that?
I feel that most organisations that aren't businesses aren't employers (cub packs, programming meets etc.)
-
Remember that Freebase included types aren’t a strict subtyping mechanism; you can always remove a type from an instance. So a programming meet could be typed as an Organization, and then Employer can be removed.
It was felt (by whoever did this—I’m not sure who) that *most* organizations likely to be in Freebase are also employers. If you disagree, it would be interesting to see how many organizations that you think are noteworthy enough to belong here are not employers. Maybe a random sample. Can you post some numbers? -
i agree that employer should be un-cotyped.
check out the 'organisation types' and you'll find most of them are not employers http://www.freebase.com/view/organization/organization_type
cheers
-
this is a big deal and is really adding alot of wrong assertions. look at types that cotype organisation very few are employers. cub_scout_ group, fanclub, criminal_organisation it should really be uncotyped promptly.
-
Y'know, I think you're right. There was a time when we were thinking that "employer" and "employee" could be considered loosely enough to include employment-like relationships (such as an unpaid officer of an organization), but I think that that probably doesn't really work. I'll wait for any more comments before changing the model (OK, removing an included type isn't much of a schematic change, per se) just in case somebody objects.
-
-
-
hello, i think this type should cotype building, structure and location. i think phone number and address should be located elsewhere maybe a url property? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:BookSources/9780300116045

i love this schema and want to see it promoted why's it have a date property? wanna cotype explosion?

Hi.
I do't know if this is a known issue:
The login on the new front page redirects me to https://www.freebase...
Seems like https is out of order. After deleting the s in the protocol name everything works fine.
-
Works for me. Maybe a temporary glitch or a firewall issue at your end?
-
Hmmm...
It's not temporal, I have first seen this problem some days ago. I did a little bit more research:
Opera doesen't let me access freebase via https and tells me that "Handshake failed because the server does not want to accept the enabled SSL/TLS protocol versions." That's odd.
And lynx says "unable to get local issuer-certificate" and "(www.freebase.com)!=cert(*.freebase.com)" but then it seems to work.
So it seems to have something to do with having one certificate for all subdomains?
It's strange because other website's https works well for me (so no firewall issues on my side).
-
I've tried with Opera 9.63 and 9.64 and don't encounter the issue you are reporting.
Try deleting all your *.freebase.com cookies and from the root page try signing in again please?
-
Ok. Solved.
Cookie delition brought no success. But it seems like I encountered a bug in Opera 10.0 Alpha (My "everyday browser")...
I tried another (stable) Opera (9.52) installation and it worked from there. (Seems like lynx was not a wise choice for double checking the error.)
Thanks for your help!
-
It's resolved in the Opera 10.0 Release Candidate Beta.

I need Diocese and Archdiocese types for a list of Roman Catholic dioceses in Ireland. I see you have created these in the Anglicanism base... should I create separate Roman Catholic diocese types, or can we somehow make expand the existing types to include both Anglicanism and Roman Catholicism?
-
@rybesh, I've already been working on some generic types which should work with any religion. I've called the type Religious Jurisdiction. Let me know if you have any comments on the type.
@jeff - where did we get to with promoting these types to the commons?
-
There's been some work on a Religious Jurisdiction type recently. I think this is a much better general solution. It should get promoted to the Religion Commons soon, I think. There's a discussion about it here: http://www.freebase.com/view/guid/9202a8c04000641f800000000be1bdd2
-
Religious Jurisdiction looks perfect. Thanks!
-
Seems I can't use this yet. Is there some way to use a type before it's been promoted to the Commons?
-
It's sitting in my personal domain at the moment, so will still be considered a 'draft'.
I've now created a base http://religiousjurisdiction.freebase.com/
Let me know if it still doesn't work.
-
I think you have to add the reciprocal link from Religious Leader to Religious Leader Tenure.
-
Sorry, I had not seen Religious Leader is in Commons.
-
It's getting promoted: https://bugs.freebase.com/browse/DA-838
Thanks for pointing the need for the reciprocation. Hopefully the reciprocation will happen once the promotion is done.
-
I can use it now, sprocketonline. Thanks for your help.
-
@sproketonline: Sorry! -- the promotion task is in my queue, but the plotting out of the actual migration gives me a headache, so I keep putting it off. I'll get it moving along again.
-
Actually, this will be a bit more straightforward than I thought -- we can promote the Jurisdiction type and some of its properties with minimal fuss -- it's just part of the model relating to religious organization leadership that gets messy, since it will require a refactoring of the existing religious organization leadership CVT. I'll update the task(s).
-
Actually, I'm going to delay this -- the migration is too complex to do piecemeal. I've posted a query to the developers list about changing the expected type of /religious_organization_leadership/role to "Religious Leadership Title". Once we get buy-in for that, we can do the migration.
I'll reciprocate the religious organization property of jurisdiction, though, so that people can better use the type in the mean time.
-
I don't think anyone has queries that would be broken by this. Can we move ahead?
-
I hope to have this done in the next day or so.
-
DA-838 is complete - go crazy!

Can I suggest that this time is time-mediated. i.e. has a 'from' and 'to' property expecting a type of 'date'.
Related to this I'd like to suggest that the property name for /soccer/football_team/current_roster be changed from 'current roster' to 'roster'. The 'current' part would now be implied through the time mediation of the football roster position.

Still the old look&feel...
When will the cool new topic pages come for the masses? (The news seem to have leaked through the blog rss syndication... ;-) )
-
We discovered a deployment issue which forced us to roll back to the previous week's release of client in the very last moments. We believe we've solved the issue. Rest assured the 'new look' will appear again hopefully early tomorrow (USA PST).
One could see what's coming here, peace out.
-
Not. bad!
I really like the idea and how you set it up. I'd love to see, the current sidebar's map view also in the "simplified" topic frontend. But I'm sure you will constantly improve it anyway.
Great job!
-
Thanks, new consumer view will feature some more magic soon (Maps most likely, it resides currently on the edit page view of the topics when this code launches).

Skud, in reference to Barbaro subject matter, the best source on the topic was used: Spretti, Encyclopedia Storco Nobilare Italiana.
Every Barbaro topic and related topic must have all flagging removed. Nonsense that happened over at Wikipedia- does not have to be followed to Freebase. Also, Baroness Grace Talarico di Capace- is not the same person as some real estate agent by the name of Grace Talarico that people from Wikipedia justified for the removal of the article about the real Baroness in the first place.
For example, Wikipedia removed an article about Aldo Barbaro, the record-breaking count talked about in the Spretti source. A street in the Barbaro baronial holdings of Catanzaro was amed after him. They said that was a hoax- nonsense, you can even goggle "Via Aldo Barbaro Catanzaro" and have a map for Catanzaro pop us and show you that very street, still named as such.
I would appreciate if my hard work and properly reserached information does not get destroyed by some amateurs who don't know about what they are talking about and screem hoax. I don't just google and pull things off the internet, I know about the things that I write about because it is verified by reputable sources, unlike amateurs who do no research and just yell hoax- if I link to something, it is because the information found in that link checks out with other legit sourcing that I reserached and found- I don't use blogs to source by. Thanks Skud.

Skud, a TFMorris has done much damage to Barbaro-family subject matter based on some lies that were originally started at Wikipedia. Someone started the rumor that their was a hoax with the Barbaro family, a hoax that never existed. I would appreciate if Freebase is a little more intelligent than the high school kids over at Wikipedia

Hi Skud. I'd like to fill in the Jursidiction for Northwest Mounted Police, however I can't figure out what it is. Can you please let me know or fill it in? Thanks!
-
Sure. Looks like they originally covered the Northwest Territories, extended into the Yukon around the time of the gold rush there, and also took on BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba before being renamed to the RCMP.

Thanks, skud!

I'm not sure you'll be able to remember that far back, but in Sept. 2008 you place the Vimy Memorial in Canada, presumably using some automated process. It's actually in France, so if you can remember what the process is, you might want to review other affected topics.

hey kirilly, good day- few things:
Crime base - is leaning awkwardly on your Legal case type, but probably this is unfair. I know little about law, but it probably makes sense to make different types for criminal and civil trials, and so is yours the civil law type then? maybe we can do this. either way, lets link both of em to Lawyer. and maybe even both to Criminal Conviction?
id like to fill in fort types on your Fort can you recip it?
if the structure2 type goes through, and danm reciprocates Death-causing event on deceased person, disaster can shed all the specific people properties we did, and just be 'statistical' or whatever. agree? danm hasn't responded yet.

hey, ive stumbled on a host of topics that i think are wrongly typed, are you the go-to person for such thing?
if so, its dinosaurs. i'm trying to do a list of all dinosaurs but for example all the Ornithopods are already typed as 'organism classification', instead of organism, like Laosaurus. its a real mess, its the whole dinosaurus kingdom i think too.
-
Cross referencing my response to you about organism vs. organism classification here.
-
oop, im wrong. sorry~

hey skud, can you make me an admin on the names base?
id like to import http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_eponyms
and make a portmanteau type.
cheers
-
-
-
Hi Kirrily. I noticed that you typed Lilium as an organism and listed it as an organism type of cat. This was obviously in error but I'm finding several instances of this misuse of Organism by Freebase staff and others so was wondering if there was a systematic reason for the errors. For example, several Organism classification topics have been typed as Organism with sex of "Other" through genderizer. I recommend removing any topics typed as Organism classification from Genderizer. Perhaps the Freebase data team is using similar tools that result in occassionally adding bad data like this?

hey skud, wikipedia's got all the nuclear test data in tables, which could be imported without much trouble if the properties in Nuclear test were disambig properties, is that possible to do temporarily?

-
Please have the common courtesy to return the SPORCalc pages back to normal before you hacked them. Other Freebase staff were advising me over the pages and had just updated the wikipedia link that was wrong. If you are intending to edit the page and remove material adding a separate page etc, you should have the professionalism to contact the person who was putting them together, ie me(sanave). If you don't correct the pages back to how they were, I will make an official complaint of malicious damage!
-
hi sanave, welcome to freebase, i looked at SPORCalc and it is organised properly. please dont feel that it has been damaged, or that skuds work is irrisponsible, as she works very hard.
-
Thanks spencer. sanave and I have corresponded by email and I think we've reached a happy medium now.
-
Yes, I was a bit shocked but Skud helped and sorted it out. I just want to have the ability to edit but I won't make it any unnecessarily longer than it is now :-) from Sanave, ps we can delete the discussions too :-)

This is one of many cases where the schema is not easy to use. The original building, a landmark project was destroyed in 1906 by the earthquake and subsequent fire which might imply the end of the story. However it was rebuilt in the same place and with the same name and functions today. How can we make this clear. making the building a continuous process The same things happens when a cathedra is designed by a particular architect and then 150 or so years later a cloister or a tower is added by someone else. I have the same problem with the White House which was built, and then rebuilt after a fire (by the same architect) and then added to in about 1900 by others. It is quite difficult to add detail to the schema withouyt using "White House 1" and then "2" which will then not match wikipedia pages.
Any ideas ?,

-
-
hey kirrily, so i guess my pitch for admin-editable types dies in the water?
-
Not at all. It's something we're taking into consideration, but I expect it'll be merged and mutated with a lot of other thoughts we've had about how to best utilise community efforts around schema modeling, without making a huge mess of course. It's on our radar, but not on our immediate release plan. Beyond that I can't really tell you what will come of it, other than that we're certainly not ignoring you, and really appreciate your input as it feeds in to our product planning.

I have added a load of titles for Emir and Sultan (which is still only a partial list of all the Sultan titles listed on Wikipedia!). The horizontal list appears awkward for this many titles - could I request that the property be changed to a vertical list?

Done!

I've added a Sultans view to the base.

Hey--noticed a huge crop of marked-for-deletes today that looked like they were requested by someone with some sort of political agenda. But when I looked into it, you marked them. Obviously, you know what you're doing, but I want to understand the rationale. Is the idea that the topics aren't entities that it makes sense to model data around?
-
Exactly! We already have a topic for "LGBT rights" and generally we remove topics like "Politics in Uganda" or "Economy of Germany" and the like, and this fits the same model.
There was a thread about it a while ago, where someone said that the topics might be usefully kept and used as Book Subjects and the like, but then we decided that you should, instead, use "Politics" and "Uganda", or "Economy" and "Germany", or "LGBT rights" and "Cameroon" so that a search for books on those subjects will turn up everything.
-
-
-
hi kirrily, thanks for the response. I've been tooling through mql all day.
Ive been able to create topics and type them though im totally stuck by typing or adding data to existing topics, because i cannot reconcile their name with their id. Is there a clever way to do this with the api? For example, how come these two are different?
2006 Gusau dam collapse , /en/2006_gusau_dam_collapse
2008 Chelopechene explosions , guid/9202a8c04000641f8000000008bede82I presume there is a way to do this which doesn't include an hour of clicking 'confirm match'. Especially when the names are perfect matches and have no hominyms. I'm natlanguage parsing wikipedia and its way fun-

Hi skud,
Queston... appears there may be a cap on how many images can be added t a gallery. I was adding to the Silver gallery and hit a point where the image is visible in the edit mode but not in the view more mode. Is there a limit of did I do something incorrectly? Is the idea not to stuff up these bases with photos?
Best regards, funkbrother
-
Hrm, I'm not sure of any particular limit! But if you hit one, then I guess it might be there. Let me look into it a bit.
I guess the idea is that each topic needs one, or at most a handful, of representative images. We're not a general photo hosting website so we don't really want to get into the business of complex image management software. So there might be a limit there just to discourage people from "stuffing up" the system with photos (to use your term).
-
Right, makes sense and what I assumed once it appeared I couldn't load anymore images. Thanks for your help.

Your international fashion schools would look good in the Fashion domain, or not ?
-
Yeah, you could make a good saved view of them! I was just loading them to show a friend who works at a design school in San Francisco and was interested in how she could use Freebase to put together information of use to her students. You'll find the few bits of what I did in a base called "California Fashion" if you're interested.
-
Why don't you sleep ??
I found California Fashion already, but you can keep the Americans, I know nothing about them, I am interested in the international schools. Maybe you could pass me some of them in the Fashion domain, you have better tools.
Thank you for the 3 designers...

I am having some trouble with copmplex tables. I have created one called Architectural consultant. It has five entries, but I am trying to remove two of them. However, it seems I have to remove them from the table that references the complex table, and since two of those tables are "Architecture firm", and "Company", I am unable to edit them. Can these entries be deleted from the "Architectural consultant" table?
-
Architectural consultant is what we call a Compound Value Type (CVT). These are notoriously difficult to delete since they don't have topics of their own and it's hard to just go to the page and flag them for delete. The best you can do is remove the links to them from outside (eg. in Architecture Firm and Company). I believe there was talk about creating a bot to go round cleaning up unlinked CVTs automatically, but I'm not sure what came of it. Perhaps someone like cheunger or crism knows; they should see this, I hope, and pipe up ;)

Thanks for hosting it. Your project has promise and great potential.

Thanks! It was great meeting you. Let me know if you'd like a hand setting up your Machine Dance domain. Have you seen our existing Musical Game type?

Hi:
You're the only person I've really had an interaction with, so I figured I'd bring this up to you. St. Louis, MO has apparently been deleted or set as a type. Is there any way to get it back to a topic? There was a ton of info in there that may have been deleted.
Jameson
-
Sorted. Thanks for catching that. It shouldn’t have been allowed to happen…
-
BTW, nothing was deleted; it’s just that the type view doesn’t show any information not related to types, as types are not expected to be anything else (like cities).
-
Thanks joguinn; looks like crism was in a more fortuitous timezone so I'm glad he caught this. FYI, some of us keep an eye on all the discussion threads everywhere on Freebase, so you could probably post a note just about anywhere and have someone pay attention ;)
-
Awesome. Thanks again, guys.

Just wanted to drop you a line as I've joined the Religion domain, and I am interested in the work that you are doing at Freebase. I run an online community called Ecunet.org that serves mostly the Christian faith, and I think we might explore how we could work with this environment.
If you get a chance, drop me a line - brian.lang@ecunet.org
Thanks!

Thanks for creating the new namesource and namesake types! I've been thinking about doing these for a while. You know that you've just created another data mob, right?
-
Yes ;) Robert was telling me I should do it as a DM and I was saying "But I only started the motorcycle one yesterday!" so I thought instead I'd just post about a handful of interesting new domains and hope that some people would get into it. Glad you like it :)
-
In general how permanent are your user-types that are not marked as draft? And should a user-type be adopted as a official type in the future, the data that has been entered is safe I hope?
-
Alan,
There's nothing inherently permanent about user types not marked as draft; the owner/admin may delete them if s/he wishes. However, this tends not to happen when those types are actually being used.
If/when we promote a type to the commons, the data moves along with it. The "Influence" domain is one example of this. At Freebase HQ there is a team called Data Architecture who are responsible for domain promotions, and they make sure this happens smoothly.
-
