It was discovered by the German-American astronomer Christian Heinrich Friedrich Peters on August 15, 1876 in Clinton, New York and named after Rhodope, the queen in Greek mythology who was turned into a mountain. 166 Rhodope was observed occulting the prominent star Regulus on October 19, 2005 from Vibo Valentia, Italy.
