  • AvtoVAZ is the Russian automobile manufacturer formerly known as VAZ: Volzhsky Avtomobilny Zavod, but better known to the world under the trade name Lada. The company was established in the late 1960s in collaboration with Fiat. The current company name is "AvtoVAZ", which stands for "Avtomobili Volzhskogo Avtomobilnogo Zavoda". AvtoVAZ is the largest company in the Eastern European and Russian automotive industry. It produces nearly one million cars a year, including the Kalina, Lada 110 and the Niva off-road vehicle. However, the original Fiat 124-based VAZ-2101, and its derivatives, remain the models most associated with its Lada brand. In the past, the most famous models were also Lada Nova and Lada Samara. But now instead of Lada Nova, the factory produces the same model VAZ-2107 for the domestic market; and instead of Lada Samara, the same model VAZ-2114/VAZ-2115. Since April 2012, VAZ produces Lada Largus: DACIA Logan MCV. The VAZ factory is one of the biggest in the world, with over 90 miles of production lines, and is unique in that most of the components for the cars are made in-house.
  • Lada is a marque of car manufactured by Russian car manufacturer AvtoVAZ based in Tolyatti, Samara Oblast. It was originally the export brand for models sold under the Zhiguli name in the domestic Soviet market after June 1966. Lada cars became popular in Russia and Eastern Europe during the last two decades of the Soviet era, particularly in former Soviet bloc countries, where they became a symbol of city life. The original Lada was widely exported in sedan and station-wagon versions, and with over 20 million units sold before production finally ended in mid-2012, it had become the highest-selling automobile to be produced without major design change. The Lada badge depicts a shallow-draft river sailing ship known as a lad'ya in Russian.
