Description
  • The Basenji is a small, elegant, athletic dog about the size of a fox terrier, with a smooth shiny coat of red/white, black/white, brindle/white, tri-colored, and tri-colored with brindle points (called trindle). Basenjis can also come in colors like sable, cream, blue, or saddled, but these colors are not accepted by the AKC and thus are difficult to find outside of their native continent of Africa. The Basenji does not bark, but does have many other vocalizations. The Basenji is not 100% hypoallergenic, although people with dog allergies are usually fine with them; they still have fur and still produce small amounts of that dog dander. Basenjis do shed their winter coat, but shedding is very minimal at other times of the year. Temperament varies greatly from dog to dog; some are outgoing and social while others are extremely shy of strangers. They have a very high prey drive and therefore should never(!) be let off leash in an unfenced area. Basenjis in general are escape artists; some climb, others dig, some others jump, and still others just squeeze themselves through tight spaces. They are also, in general, very destructive when bored and are not shy of stealing food, either. Despite a survey ranking the Basenji as the second-dumbest breed, they're very intelligent; they're problem-solvers and thinkers. The Basenji serves only himself unless you have a very good reason for him to do what you want; reverse psychology works best with this breed. . Height: 15-17 inches (38-43 cm.) Weight: 20-26 pounds (9-12 kg.)dogbreedinfo.com
  • The Basenji is a breed of hunting dog that was bred from stock originating in central Africa. Most of the major kennel clubs in the English-speaking world place the breed in the Hound Group; more specifically, it may be classified as belonging to the sighthound type. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale places the breed in Group 5, Spitz and Primitive types, and the United Kennel Club places the breed in the Sighthound & Pariah Group. The Basenji produces an unusual yodel-like sound commonly called a "barroo", due to its unusually shaped larynx. This trait also gives the Basenji the nickname "Barkless Dog". Basenjis share many unique traits with Pariah dog types. Basenjis, like dingoes and some other breeds of dog, come into estrus only once annually, as compared to other dog breeds which may have two or more breeding seasons every year. Both dingoes and basenji lack a distinctive odor, and are prone to howls, yodels, and other ululated vocalizations over the characteristic bark of modern dog breeds.
