  • The Belgrade Offensive or the Belgrade Strategic Offensive Operation was an offensive military operation in which Belgrade was liberated from the German Wehrmacht by the joint efforts of the Soviet Red Army, the Yugoslav Partisans, and the Bulgarian People's Army. These forces launched separate but loosely coordinated operations that successfully forced the Germans out of the Belgrade area. The Red Army advance across Yugoslav borders followed after an agreement between Tito's provisional government and Stalin in Moscow on September 1944. This agreement envisaged an immediate evacuation of Soviet troops from Yugoslav soil after the conclusion of the operations. Bulgarian troops were put under tactical subordination of the 3rd Ukrainian Front Command, while "combat cooperation between the Red Army and the National Liberation Army of Yugoslavia was accomplished by accepting unique concept of operations and by coordination of the supreme headquarters of both armies", and later "by personal contacts commanders and staffs".
