- Buontalenti was in the service of the Medici's, the ruling family of Florence, for over sixty years.
- Buontalenti first entered the household of Cosimo I, Grand Duke of Tuscany as a youth and rose to become designer and supervisor of entertainment at the Medici court.
- As a young man he worked in the vast Boboli gardens behind the Palazzo Pitti which were being landscaped by Niccolo Pericoli Tribolo.
- After Tribolo's death in 1550 Buontalenti and others took over.
- He also worked on the gardens of the Villa Castello after Tribolo's death.
- In the 1560's, he was appointed designer for the renovation of Cosmio's Villa of Cereto where he built gigantic double ramps leading to the villa.
- One of Buontalenti's early mechanical devices was a child's toy which was a peep- show.
- Cosimo's son, Francesco, was a keen amateur scientist and he and Buontalenti shared together an interest in mechanics and science.
- In 1574, Buontalenti was appointed to complete the third floor of the Uffizi palace after the architect Vasari died in that year.
- Cosimo also died in 1574 and Buontalenti designed the baldachin above his catafalque.
