Brace Paine, also known as Nathan Howdeshell, is the guitarist of American band The Gossip. He is from Arkansas, and now resides in Portland, Oregon. He DJed under the name "DJ Nightschool" but changed his name in May 2007 to "The Chain". He also runs a record label called Fast Weapons. He has released a Gossip/Tracy and the Plastics 7" and a 7" by seminal Portland no-wave band Sleet Mute Night Mute. His heroes include Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, Maya Deren and Ray Johnson. Unlike Beth Ditto and Hannah Blilie, the other two members of The Gossip, Brace is heterosexual. His previous bands include Die Monitr Batss, A.S.T., Deep Jail, The Soaking Wet Moustache Of A Man Twice My Age and Xeaxx Xeaxx, his collaboration with sound artist John Wiese. He currently records music and makes videos under the moniker Feather Figure. He curates the 'Nightschool' 7" series that debuted on Kill Rock Stars with Erase Errata, Gossip, Sleetmute Nightmute and Supreme Indifference (feat. Kim Gordon, Alan Licht and Jim O'Rourke).
