Catherine Piper is a recurring character on the TV show Boston Legal. She was a recurring cast member, never in the opening titles but credited as also starring. She first appeared on The Practice for three episodes, then on Boston Legal for seventeen episodes in the spin-off's five season run. She is a gossipy, open-minded, and calculating character who is portrayed by Betty White. Betty White reprised her role of Catherine in the final season of Boston Legal. Back when Alan was young, Catherine was his neighbor. At age 9, Alan Shore put a bag of burning dog excrement on her front porch. Never one to forget, Catherine returned to see Alan and shook his hand with dog excrement on it. She served as a witness in a case, extorting from the defendant's mother in exchange for withholding testimony, and Alan made her out to be a bitter, demented old widow. Catherine was first seen in "From Whence We Came" on Boston Legal, applying for Alan's secretarial job.
