The Digital Waveguide Mesh extends Karplus-Strong models of strings and Digital Waveguide models of strings and acoustic tubes into the multi-dimensional cases by creating a scattering mesh. The design comprises bidirectional delay lines and "scattering junctions" to model wave propagation in 2- and 3-dimensional medias. In its most basic form it is bidirectional unit delays and 4-way no-multiply junction computations to model wave propagation in a membrane. It is based on a demonstrated mathematical equivalence under certain conditions of modeling of transmission line scattering as digital waveguides and partial finite difference schemes for 2 and 3d wave propagation.
