  • East Coast hip hop is a regional subgenre of hip hop music that originated in New York City, USA, during the 1970s. Hip hop is recognized to have originated and evolved first in the East Coast. The style in the East Coast emerged as a definitive subgenre after artists from other regions of the United States emerged with different styles. Hip-hop culture has been internationally recognized after its huge popularity in The Bronx, specifically the South Bronx in the 1970s. The main components of hip hop culture during that time and still today are MC’ing, break-dancing, graffiti, and DJ’ing. The main purpose of the rise of hip-hop culture was to keep the people in power with something they could relate to. This ties back to the marginalization of African-Americans for years prior to the rise of hip hop culture.
