  • Free software, software libre or libre software is software that respects the freedom of computer users, by putting the users first and granting them freedom of control in running and adapting their computing and data-processing to their needs; as well as allowing them the social freedom to be able to actively cooperate with any users and developers of their choice. Users of free software are free in these activities, because they do not need to ask for any permission; and they are are not restricted in activities through restrictive proprietary licenses, or requirements of having to agree to restrictive terms of others, and they are not already restricted from the outset. The goals of Free Software are reached by granting the following freedom-rights: users are free to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software; these freedoms are explicitly granted and not suppressed. Thus, free software is a matter of liberty, not price: as an example, free software always guarantees the freedom rights to study and modify software, by the availability of the source code.
