- The finest language is mostly made up of simple unimposing words.
- It is, I fear, but a vain show of fulfilling the heathen precept, Know thyself, and too often leads to a self-estimate which will subsist in the absence of that fruit by which alone the quality of the tree is made evident.
- Our deeds still travel with us from afar, and what we have been makes us what we are.
- Animals are such agreeable friends, they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms.
- Keep true, never be ashamed of doing right; decide on what you think is right and stick to it.
- Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles. What do we live for if not to make the world less difficult for each other?
- No evil dooms us hopelessly except the evil we love, and desire to continue in, and make no effort to escape from.
- Perhaps his might be one of the natures where a wise estimate of consequences is fused in the fires of that passionate belief which determines the consequences it believes in.
- The sons of Judah have to choose that God may again choose them. The divine principle of our race is action, choice, resolved memory.
- In the vain laughter of folly wisdom hears half its applause.

- Eliot embodied many of the things Victorians admired: her rise to intellectual eminence, her role as a translator of German theology, her achievement as a new kind of novelist, and her faith in human beings and in the ultimate progress of the species.

- In 1850 John Chapman, the publisher of Eliot's translation from the German: "The Life of Jesus Critically Examined", asked her to review a book, "The Progress of the Intellect", for "The Westminster Review".
- Eliot made up her mind to go to London and become a freelance writer.
- Now calling herself Marian, rather than Mary Ann, she took lodgings in 1851, at Chapman's, a kind of literary hotel.
- A few months later, Chapman bought "The Westminster Review", and for three years she served as sub-editor.
- She became friends with Spencer, sub-editor of "The Economist", whose "Social Statics" had just been published by Chapman.
- At the Chapman's parties, she met literary figures in an atmosphere of political and religious radicalism.
- George Henry Lewes was a Victorian journalist, whose unconventional life made him fascinating to some and repulsive to others.
- Spencer was to introduce Eliot to her future lover, George Henry Lewes, and her future husband, John Walter Cross.
- Meredith called him "a mercurial little showman".
- In 1850, Lewes met Eliot and they became inseparable companions.
