- The most dire disaster in love is the death of imagination.
- Passions spin the plot: We are betrayed by what is false within.
- Not till the fire is dying in the grate, Look we for any kinship with the stars. Oh, wisdom never comes when it is gold, And the great price we paid for it full worth: We have it only when we are half earth. Little avails that coinage to the old!
- Possession without obligation to the object possessed approaches felicity.
- A human act once set in motion flows on forever to the great account. Our deathlessness is in what we do, not in what we are.
- Cynicism is intellectual dandyism.
- Speech is the small change of silence.
- Memoirs are the backstairs of history.
- Ah, what a dusty answer gets the soul when hot for certainties in this our life!
- We who have seen Italia in the throes,Half risen but to be hurled to ground, and now,Like a ripe field of wheat where once drove plough,All bounteous as she is fair, we think of thoseWho blew the breath of life into her frame:Cavour, Mazzini, Garibaldi: Three:Her Brain, her Soul, her Sword; and set her freeFrom ruinous discords, with one lustrous aim.

- In 1846, eighteen months after he graduated from school, Meredith was articled to Richard Stephen Charnock, a young London solicitor, for training in the legal profession.
- Charnock was a sociable, educated man with an interesting circle of friends, among whom Edward Peacock, son of the well-known eccentric author Thomas Love Peacock.
- At the age of twenty one, without any profession or social position and with only a very small estate by maternal inheritance, he proposed and they were married on 9th August 1849.
- Through Edward, Meredith met his sister, Mary Ellen Nicolls, a widow seven years older than he and the mother of a five-year-old girl.
- After a honeymoon on the Rhine, they moved to Weybridge, Surrey.
- Meredith and his wife planned to support themselves by writing.
- He had already contributed poems, articles and translations to the Charnock manuscript and 'Chambers Edinburgh Journal' published his poem 'Chillianwallah' (1849), inspired by a battle in the Second Sikh War.
- Poems by Meredith appeared in Dickens' magazine 'Household Words', and his first volume of poetry, entitled 'Poems', came out in 1851.
- The volume gained him some exposure and good reviews, especially from fellow writers and poets William Michael Rossetti, Kingsley and Tennyson.
- 'Poems', however, was a commercial failure and since Meredith had paid the publication costs of 60 pounds, his financial situation deteriorated badly.
