The Guardian Units of Nations, often abbreviated to GUN or G.U.N., is a fictional organization featured in the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. Its status within the Sonic the Hedgehog canon (aside from its Sonic X incarnation) is that of a worldwide military/emergency law enforcement federation, somewhat similar to NATO and Marvel Comics' S.H.I.E.L.D.. Though it may be made from the general English term for a firearm, "gun," its origin could also stem from the Japanese word for 'army' which is simply 'gun' or 'guntai'. It is also likely the full title of the organization - Guardian Units of Nations - is a backronym. Though the acronym "G.U.N." was pronounced like a word in Shadow the Hedgehog, it was only spelled out in Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity. In Sonic Adventure 2, released in 2001 for the Sega Dreamcast, the G.U.N. organization was introduced. It is sent to capture Sonic the Hedgehog after he is suspected to have stolen a Chaos Emerald and attacked G.U.N. forces while escaping, when in reality he was mistaken for Shadow the Hedgehog.
