Henry Oldenburg en
Henry Oldenburg was a German theologian known as a diplomat and a natural philosopher. He was one of the foremost intelligencers of Europe of the seventeenth century, with a network of correspondents to rival those of Fabri de Peiresc, Marin Mersenne and Ismaël Boulliau. At the foundation of the Royal Society he took on the task of foreign correspondence, as the first Secretary. Wikipedia [ - ]

- Oldenburg graduated with a master's degree in theology in 1639.
- After arriving at Utrecht University in the Netherlands to continue his studies in 1641 nothing is recorded of his life for the next twelve years.
- In 1653 he was chosen by the city of Bremen to lead an embassy to England to get Cromwell's agreement to respect the neutrality of Bremen shipping during the war between England and the Dutch republic.
- It is most likely that he was employed as a private tutor in England and on the continent because at some stage he became proficient in French, Italian and English.
- He remained in England, probably working as a private tutor, after the war ended in 1654.
- In October of that year, he met Cromwell to ask him to intercede in the quarrel between Charles X of Sweden and Bremen, and succeeded in persuading Cromwell to write to both parties.
- By 1656, Oldenburg had established himself among the Puritan intellectual community in England.
- Most important, he got to know Lady Ranelagh, the sister of the scientist Boyle.
- He was friendly with Hartlib and the poet Milton , and corresponded with the philosopher Hobbes.
- This contact turned Oldenburg towards science rather than the theological and classical interests he had previously followed.
