As an economist, Suárez Coppel has served as director of finance in Pemex, chief advisor to former Mexican Secretary of Finance Francisco Gil Díaz, as adjunct-director for derivatives in Banamex, as treasurer of Televisa, and as vice president of finance in Grupo Modelo; the largest Mexican brewery.
He has also lectured in economics at Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México, at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain and at Brown University, in the United States.
