  • Mahat is an Ekthariya Chhetri surname of Nepal, of Khasa heritage. History suggests that one of the jumli malla king in medieval time made his younger brother Dharma Malla chief of army staffs. This granted Dharma Malla the title of MAHAT and as a result his descendants started writing Mahat as their surnames. Like other Khasa chhetris such as Thapa, Basnyat, Karki, Khadka and Rawat, Mahats are also Masta worshippers, a local non-vedic deity of the Karnali region. Among twelve Mastas, Khaapar Masta is their Kuldevata. Khasa Chhetris are referred to by the place of origin and therefore Mahats are also called as Kalikote Mahat. Mahats have been an integral part of the Nepalese Army since the time of the Shah kings. Many people with the Mahat surname still serve in the Nepalese Army as well as in the Indian and USA armies in different designations, both officers and non-officers. At the time of the 1991 Nepal census, Mahat had a population of 4,240 people living in 799 dwellings. The most prominent population of Mahat can be found in Mahat Gaun of Jumla.
