  • The second chapter of St. Anthony Hall to be called Sigma, the chapter was founded at the Sheffield Scientific School in 1868 and later began considering all Yale students as prospective members. Unlike many other secret societies at Yale, St. A.s taps (selects for membership) rising juniors; most other societies only select rising seniors as members. The Sigma chapter hall was built in 1913, funded by Frederick William Vanderbilt and designed by Charles C. Haight. When Yale banned residential fraternities, the Hall sold the neighboring dormitories to the university. The building is owned by the Anthony Trust Association, the Sigma alumni association, and leased to the chapter.Sigma was the first Yale society to become co-educational in 1971, and the first St. Anthony Hall chapter to openly do so as well. Sigma was the first St. Anthony Hall chapter to admit a non-white brother, and appears also to have been the first St. Anthony Hall chapter to admit a Jewish brother.
