William Shakespeare en
William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, two epitaphs on a man named John Combe, one epitaph on Elias James, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare was born and brought up in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613 at age 49, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others. - ...O brave new world, That has such people in't!
- First thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers.
- Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.
- Strive mightily, but eat and drink as friends.
- The man that hath no music in himself, nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils. The motions of his spirit are dull as night, and his affections dark as Erebus. Let no such man be trusted.
- Cowards die a thousand deaths. The valiant taste of death but once.
- It is the bright day that brings forth the adder, and that craves wary walking.
- A whoreson jackanapes must take me up for swearing; as if I borrowed mine oaths of him and might not spend them at my pleasure. When a gentleman is disposed to swear, it is not for any standers-by to curtail his oaths, ha?
- Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy, but not expressed in fancy; rich not gaudy; for the apparel oft proclaims the man.
- For we which now behold these present days have eyes to wonder, but lack tongues to praise.

- Except for his marriage to Ann Hathaway when he was 18, little is known of Shakespeare's early life until he was about 25, and his first play, "Henry VI", was performed c. 1589-92.
- A 1592 pamphlet written by a fellow playwright recognized him as a notable figure in London theater.
- In Shakespeare's time, members of the British court liked to hobnob with members of the theatrical world.
- Queen Elizabeth herself was a patron of the theater.
- They understood that friends in high places could be instrumental in keeping a theater open, since companies needed a license from the Lord Chamberlain and the approval of the political censor.
- For their part, the people of the theater courted the courtiers.
- Shakespeare's "Richard III", for example, written c. 1593, was thought by some to be a theatrical risk since it maligned an English king.
- It dealt with the murder of the two young heirs to the throne at the end of the 14th century, and the man behind it all was clearly Richard III, whom Shakespeare portrayed as a deformed, evil monster.
- But, surprising many, the censor gave the play his blessing, because at the end, Richard's defeat and death opened the way to the wise rule of the Tudor dynasty (of which Elizabeth was now the representative).
- In 1593, Shakespeare followed up "Richard III," with his first comedy, "Comedy of Errors", but its run was cut short by an outbreak of the plague, which closed down all theaters in London.
