Okay, it seems with alittle more looking I see where this might be going. I found the article on adding content. It is limited to uploading jpg's and other still images. How then do I go about loading all the videos on my site? My guess is to create image icon jpegs of all the video files. Please coach me in the right direction on this effort.

Also I use the term videofeedback as double entendre' on purpose. I use to make videofeedback while in high school from 1973 to 1976 having been introduced to it by Richard Ledrer of St Paul's School. Recently I discovered who the original progenitors of this art form are. I do have a videofeedback clip on my website at videofeedback dot com, but felt that as an artform it was a little limited and so I took on the more commercial meaning of all video being caught in the web feedback loop and have started add ing public doamin videos to my site ever since.

Will feeebase ever allow flash video content uploading, or is there a way to incorporate my site into freebase and leave the videos where they are but have them accessible via freebase queries from around the web?

Hi, I am the developer of videofeedback.com, and am interested in freebase. I love the idea of all the flash videos on my site becoming a part of freebase. As far as I can verify they are all in the public domain. There are now more than 800 movies and old time radio shows and videos. I discovered Mr Hilis's work/s via an article on complexity and find myself here. How can I begin using freebase on my website?

addendum, I have dared your sytem and started a videofeedback database already, and have found myself on the html creation tool. I'd like to use my own website html so the end of this effort will marry to my website appropriately with only minor addins to the current site look. I see the html code template but am wondering how to do the marriage of my own site html to the freebase template?

Also I currently utilize the SWFObject and 2 different embeddable flash players, the wimpy, and the jeroen players that can be put in html pages for playback. May I still keep using these tools and/or is the a better way to do what I am doing and incorporate the freebase as well?

Also I have just discovered that my wiki article on videofeedback is already loaded into freebase. Imagine that.

So now I am attempting to add content...but am finding myself a little stonewalled as I write this. How do I go about adding the flash based movies on my website?

-1 for promoting this in its current form. There's the basis of a good schema here, but this isn't it yet. I raised a number of issues in this mail, none of which seem to have been addressed. More generally:

There seem to be a mixture of application-specific properties ("heat", "interest") and general properties in the types - promoting the latter makes sense, but I think the former should stay out of the commons.
Do we want to go down the route of having every property being a CVT with source and date? I think everyone acknowledges data provenance is an issue, but I'm not convinced this is the right solution.

Your composer type has the commons composer as an included type. This means that whenever you type a topic as /base/catalog/composer, that topic will be automatically typed as /music/composer. This is just a convenience, there is no other relationship, semantics or syntax gained.

If yo are interested in loading music data, you should subscribe to the data-modeling@ mailing list because the music schema will undertake some major changes in the coming months!

If you haven't already, it's definitely worth reading the Commons page on the wiki. Generally, this looks good to me, but a few mostly nitpick comments:

Documentation: none of the properties of thematic catalog are documented. Musicologist isn't documented at all.
Documentation part 2: the type description for thematic catalog doesn't really tell me anything that the name of the type doesn't. What is this type for? What sort of things should be typed as this type?

I would be looking at extending my base to allow lists of composer works with opus and catalog numbers, in due course. I won't be able to load too much into it but would be happy to (help)develop the structure and will be linking into it (maybe feeding as well as reading) from Songbird. (I built the catalogs base for a lyrics getting Songbird add-on I will be releasing soon...)

I've posted on the BWV and composition pages, suggesting we link up.

Hi I've developed thematic catalogs base to hold high-level details of the thematic catalogs of composers - inc. BWV, of course.

I'm just figuring out how to link it into existing types (composer/musicologist/etc.) and considering how to extend it to allow bases of composers works. IS this something you would be interested in collaborating on? Maybe we could generalize the existing BWV base somehow, and them make it available hold works by any composer with appropriate opus and/or catalog numbers. A suitably filtered view could be available for any composer - or interestingly e.g. lyricist (i.e. which composers composed to words by xxx and when!)

I would like to link into it from a Songbird (open source music player) add-on to provide titling/info display functionality and, eventually, maybe some sort of data feed from Songbird tracks.

I'm new to freebase so just finding my feet. I'm finding the structural stuff OK but am not sure how to fit into existing material!

Grateful for any thoughts etc.

It seems like most of the attributes of a library and a library system are common to both public libraries/systems and non-public libraries/systems, but currently we only have a type for the public ones. There are some types in the /mladraft base that look like they could be used. Can we either get them promoted, define some new ones, or generalize the current types?

I'm looking at things like the Harvard University Library system or the Vatican Library.

Hi Frank. I noticed you changed the name of the Widener Library topic to its full formal name. Generally Freebase, like Wikipedia, uses the common name for topics, as opposed to the formal name, if they differ. I live a few miles away, so I can confirm that Wikipedia is correct in this instance, so I've changed it back. You changed a few other topics around the same time, but I didn't review them. In general I tend go with the name from Wikipedia unless there's a really strong reason not to.

I was just pondering how to link columns to collection of columns published as books. Must topics for individual columns be created, or can I just start with the column topic, give it a year range, and link that CVT to the collection? I can't imagine entering individual columns for Herb Caen, for example, whose 50+ year career produced columns at a frequency of 5-6 days a week, even if I could find and correlate that data. Besides, his columns are not reprinted verbatim but heavily edited to omit anything too newsy and rearranged for flow. Technically the books don't really contain the original columns.

I think this is a reasonable denormalization. As soon as you do it, people are going to want to add Contributing Editors (i.e. senior writers) as well as Editors-in-Chief, so you might as well go whole hog to begin with and include the title in the CVT.

Capturing non-newspaper columns is a good idea. Some columns don't really have regular authors, just a regular periodical (the New Yorker has a slew of these: Talk of the Town, Onward & Upward with the Arts, Shouts & Murmurs, etc.), which we should keep in mind as a use case.

One additional thought I had is that if someone wanted to create topics for instances of a column, they could type the Column as a Literary Series. Not suggesting it be included as an included type, since it's definitely going to be the minority case (although I wish it weren't -- I could have once saved myself a lot of time if someone had entered each one of JB Priestley's "Thoughts in the Wilderness" columns individually somewhere, and further entered which ones were collected in the book of the same name. I'm just saying.).

The current schema for periodicals calls for editors (and really everybody else involved in the production of a periodical) to be entered using the "employees" property of the Employer type (thereby making all periodicals into employers). One of the problems with this is that a lot of periodicals don't really have employees (student publications, fanzines, a lot of academic journals, to name a few types). A couple people have commented on this recently in various places, and I'd like to fix this. So, I can think of two ways of dealing with this:

A property on Periodical for "Editors" (linking to a CVT with from/to dates)
Or a similar property for "Editorial Staff" or something similar, again linking to a CVT, with from/to dates and job title.

Both would semi-denormalize the employment model, since for professional magazines, the data would be the same. #1 would be less of a denormalization, since "editor" is a significant role for any periodical, and special-casing it, even for professional pubs probably makes sense anyway. #2, while more of a denormalization, allows for more data to be captured for all periodicals.

I'd love to hear any thoughts or other suggestions about this.

One approach would be to ignore the syndication status of a column when it comes to column publishers. A relationship type of column + published by + publishing entity, with date runs, may do the trick.

I haven't really thought about modeling syndication relationship to newspapers, mainly because data about subscribing publications (with dates) would be difficult to obtain for historical columns and newspapers.

If you look at Mass in B Minor you can see how multiple similar types applied to the same topic end up looking to the user. Basically your Composer type would just hold the reciprocal link to the catalog while the main commons Composer would contain all the other relevant information.

Are you thinking of extending your schema to works enumerated in the catalogs? You might consider collaborating with Raymond Yee on generalizing the work that he did for JS Bach BWV numbers in the Johann Sebastian Bach base.

All I want to do is get my base linking to existing composer info. and showing up when people look at a composer. Am I going about this the right way?

I'm not insistent on keeping ownership of the data and would like to make it available for anyone to use/add to.

I think it's because you linked to the wrong Composer type from Thematic Catalog. You linked it to the Composer type in the Music commons (which as masouras says can't be easily changed). I see that you have created a Composer type in the Catalog base which you probably meant to link to. You should change where the property links to, and ensure you click the Composer in your Catalog base.

You have to get someone who is an admin of the Music domain (/music) to add it.

However, we don't usually link to base or user properties unless they move into the commons schema. If you want to propose amendments to any commons schema, you can always ask in the data-modeling@freebase.com mailing list.
