I'm a senior Computer Science major and I'd like to use Freebase in my senior project. However, I've never worked with an API like this before and I'm finding it difficult to find examples for basic programs. How do I call the Freebase service in my code? Which languages can I use? What kind of format does the data have to be in before I can upload it, and does uploading it mean it appears on the Metaweb servers as if someone had added something through the website? It doesn't seem well-organized for the novice programmer, and I could really use some help.

This property is specific enough to strategy games that Strategy Game and Strategy Game Unit types are probably in order. If you create these in your own domain for now (on sandbox.freebase.com), then you could add Units as a property of the Strategy Game type. That property would have an expected type of Strategy Game Unit. From there, you could augment both types with any other properties you want, such as a property that specifies whether the game is turn-based or real-time. Hope this helps, and if you need help getting started, I can create the types for you in my domain.

Mike, the "55" shutter speeds you speak of include half and third stops. As mentioned in my previous post, some cameras allow half/third stops, some don't. If the properties say that a camera has the shutter speed of 1/8000 at one end and 30 at the other, and supports 1/3 stop increments, the unspecified values in the middle are deterministic and easily figured out. So I think you can get away with just specifying the shutter speed range and the "step".

I also filed a bug for a more user friendly rational data type: CLI-5172. In the mean time, an enumerated CVT seems like a pretty good solution.

The "one over x" format is the standard for shutter speeds. A shutter speed of 0.00013 seconds is inaccessible as data and makes no sense to even seasoned photographers.

If the "1/x" format is not implementable in Freebase, a second option would be to specify all standard full-stop shutter speed in an enumeration, as a new type. Add a property for fraction equivalent in seconds, and voila, it's sortable again! There aren't as many shutter speeds as you might think: 1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000 (s). Even the extended range of a digital or newer analog camera adds only a few more full-stop shutter speeds to this list: extending the slow end to 30s, and on the fast end to 1/8000 or if really ambitious, one more: 1/16000.

Also, note that most prosumer and above cameras have a "bulb" setting. That's the slowest shutter speed on those cameras. There should be a property to input a camera's support for "bulb", or lack thereof.

Shutter speeds are often offsetable in 1/2 or 1/3 stops. I'd suggest either turning the shutter_speed property into a CVT to incorporate this data, or adding a second property to capture this capability.

Since we have to deal with both integers and fractions, a "fraction" data type might not work very well, since you'd have to put the whole numbers as 30/1.

Here's a completely whacky idea: make "shutter speed" into an enumerated list. It's a pretty constrained set, after all. If you wanted to be able to sort (programmatically, that is, rather than in your browser), you could have a property on the shutter speed type for speed in seconds which could hold values like 0.00013.

In /digital_cameras/shutter_speed, I want to show the slowest and fastest shutter speed. For the Canon EOS 50D, the slowest speed is 30 seconds, and the fastest is 1/8000 of a second. If I use seconds as the data type, then it shows up as 0.00013, which is unappealing.

So, scud suggested I use text even though you can't sort on that.

Should we create some sort of "fractions of a second" or "fractions" data type?

Personally, I'm happy for exhibition to sit in multiple 'exhibition type' buckets. Some of the most interesting exhibitions happen in the intersection of multiple disciplines - art and science, for instance.

My original thinking behind 'exhibition type' was that it gives you information about the form of the exhibition, rather than the subject (which is what the subject field is for). So 'award exhibitions' - where shortlisted entries are all exhibited, and then the winners marked - is a distinct form. As are art exhibitions (where there's a form for the labels), Photography exhibitions, and so on...

One problematic exhibit for these 5 buckets would be The Best of Manchester. This kind of atypical though, since it's an annual competition, and doesn't travel from museum to museum. It covers art, fashion, and music. it's more of an event than an exhibition. so, maybe we shouldn't worry about this one too much.

I'm thinking we should make the Exhibition Type be a unique property, since exhibits will tend to fit mostly into one category or another (I hope), and that simplifies the task of having to figure out which of the n/5 property values you should assign to the Exhbition Type.

We have quite a few exhibition types (32) already, and it would be nice to lump them into a manageable number that would fit nicely into an enumerated type. So, let's see what seems to cover all of these:

Art exhibition (includes crafts, clothing, jewelry, and sculpture)

Artifact exhibition- mummies and other really old stuff that you wouldn't exactly call art.

Photography exhibition- one could all this art, too, but it's a large enough category to stand on its own

Science exhibition- includes preserved human bodies, hands-on science exhibits

Memoribilia- collections of old stuff organized around a theme, but not old and junky enough to be called artifacts. Or we could call this historical, but that might confuse it with artifacts, and also art exhibitions and photography could be construed as historical.

So, I think all the existing Exhibition types fit into these buckets. Now, the question is, do we make this a unique property? I could convince myself either way at this point.
