Freebase doesn't distinguish name types beyond "preferred name" (ie name) and "other names" (ie aliases or AKAs). Ideally you'd want to be able to match up the name variant with the event or the source (e.g. name as it appears on the birth certificate), but the name model isn't that sophisticated yet.

What is the correct way to enter a person who changed their name from the birth name?

Looking @ Bob Dylan; I see he's got a whole mess 'o aliases, however, looking @ his mother Beatty Zimmerman she's listed as giving birth to Bob Dylan, when in fact her child was not known as Bob Dylan until sometimes after his parents named him Robert Zimmerman.

Yes, yes, people should be listed by the name of which they are known, but isn't there a type to note name change(s)--or is this "type" the alias?

It depends, and you will need to do this on a work-by-work basis. If the work consists of reproductions of works by an artist, the artist is usually listed as the author of the whole book (the compiler is merely an editor). In that case, what exactly is the subject? I would argue that the artworks are the subjects. If it is an art history book about a particular artist's works then the writer of the text is listed as the author and the artist is listed as the subject. For exhibition catalogues, list the curators as editors and the artists as subjects. Often times, the curators and artists (along with the gallery) are also listed as the agents of responsibility (authors).

Hi. I think perhaps you've misunderstood what the Award type is for. This is intended to cover things like Turner Prize, not being "awarded" a gallery showing or similar things. Certainly minor awards can be included in Freebase, but they should be formal awards with a name, sponsoring organization, list of recipients, etc.

I'll take a crack at cleaning up the ones which don't fit, but I just wanted you to understand why.

It's based on an algorithm which tries to guess the most notable type. I agree it's not always ideal.

I guarantee you that the Nobel was the first thing mentioned in his obituary, why is it that he comes up as an ``Academic''?

Is this set someplace or is this an automatic function of Freebase?

I am beginning a review of Nobel laureates by university affiliation--and I'm using http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobel_Prize_laureates_by_university_affiliation.

This is the first, the VERY FIRST record I am reviewing (yes, yes, it's also the only record I have reviewed) and the ERRORS ARE ALARMING.

FB lists Dr. Mulliken's education as: Massachusetts Institute of Technology University of Chicago Harvard University

while the Wikipedia no NO RECORD OF MIT, U. CHICAGO, nor HARVARD whatsoever; the wikipedia lists his degrees as being issued by Oberlin College (in 1891) and his doctorate in physics from Columbia University (in 1895); NOTE: He was the very first person to earn a Ph.D. from that department @ Columbia University.
