You wouldn't have to convert all the existing contributor information to the new indirect style. I see it more as a way to 'augment' existing types and objects with extra information. For certain objects, it might play a primary role in describing the contributors. But for things like books, with a fairly rigid structure of contributors (basically 'author') the fixed types would be much preferable. For example, if I wanted to say that a particular book had cover art by John Jones, I could attach that information easily and intuitively. A generic way of recording contributor information could also help for adding unstructured information to television and movie objects. Basically it would be a 'catch-all' type in most cases.

This is an interesting suggestion. The main issue is that we would basically have to replace all authorship properties (author, editor, maybe poet, illustrator, etc.) and related types with one contributor property and type. There is some elegance to this, although we would also lose some value -- William Faulkner, for example, would no longer be of type "author" but of type "published work creator" or something like that. (Person is not a good choice because we really, really want to be able to see a list of works that people have written, illustrated, etc. and I don't think we'd want that property on all person topics.) This would be a major change to the schema, and would require a large amount of data migration, so I'd be reluctant to take it on without a lot more discussion. (Also unfortunately, fixing the myriad issues with the publishing domain is far down the list of things I have to fix!)

I would very much like to record information about published works that have multiple contributors such as illustrators, writers, etc. I would like to record information about comic book graphic novels. The only aspect I want to dig into is the multi-creator aspect, not recording every issues of every series. I just want to record the "story" and the "creators". It seems like this format could also be used for any illustrated book, or for other multi-media-ish works. I have created a "Comic Book Contributor" in my own area, but I think it would be better to make this non-comic-book specific. I'd like to see a "Composite Work" or "Compound Work" type. This type would include a list of "Work Contributions". Each "Work Contribution" would be a triple of: (Role[Profession], Contributor[Person], Notes[Text]) It would be a generic way to record a persons contributions to a work. The types I created were named specifically for comic books, but they could easily apply to broader kinds of works.
