I don't think that a separate property for "famous" (for whatever definition of fame someone wants to use) professors is a good idea for the types in the commons domains. We don't separate "famous" alumni, or "famous" employees in other industries separately. I can see where it would be interesting to find out about them, but have a duplicate property would mean that either the data had to be entered twice or the information about an institution's faculty would be stored differently in two places, making it harder to query that data. If you (or someone) wanted to create a "Notable Professor" type in a private domain that delegated some of the properties from the education/empolyment models, though, I think that would be a very interesting way to do this.

Certainly, but I do not mean "normal" professors but real famous ones such as Nobel Prize Winners, notorious artists who teach, and so on... Every institution has some famous alumni and it would be nice to have a place where one can list the exceptional teachers as well. They are special, or not ??

Professors (and any other faculty or staff) can be added using the "employees" property on the "employer" type. (All educational institutions should be typed as Employer; if one isn't, feel free to add the Employer type.) If you want to add non-faculty professors (visiting professors, research fellows, and the like), you can add the "academic institution" type, which has properties for these types of roles.

Wikipedia tends to classify by the broadest institution, so there are a lot of actors associated with Yale University instead of the drama school. I think it's fine that we start with the lower-precision classification and as data becomes available, replace it with the more specific.

The "parent institution" thing is a known bug -- Bryan's actually in the process of fixing it. See his post on the developers mailing list. Renaming the faculty property is a good idea.

Why does the "Parent institution" property of this type point to College/university if this type can be used to describe primary and secondary institutions? Shouldn't it point back to itself and have a linked in property of "Subsidiary institution"?

Another suggestion is that "Faculty" (dated integer) should be renamed to "Number of faculty".

We have some of that -- school address, schools in the district -- already (see type School district). Area et al. are a good idea; we could do this just by co-typing school districts as locations. I think we should be able to get enrollment numbers pretty easily -- there's a database with that information kicking around somewhere. I think any of these values would be good additions, but I do think I'd like to wait to see what kind of data is freely available before adding properties. These folks are obviously getting it from somewhere, though, so it's surely out there.

I'll add "location" as an included type now.

(Your home school district seems to have an alarming problem with decling enrollment, I can't help but notice.)

Well, it would be interesting to find the actual school enrollment area (where the child is eligible to go to that school by geocode info as drawn on a map by freebase).

State of California has school districts, I assume all (if not most) US States organize their public grade-schools into districts.

Here's my home school district info in a nice neat location (unfortunately 'all rights reserved' for this supposedly public data...I guess it must be stored elsewhere in a more generously licensed manner)

Or, I suppose you could argue that everyone should be linked to the University itself, but I think that's less useful in the long run (if I'm interested in directors who went to the Yale School of Drama, I'd rather query that than to have to filter Yale Univ. grads by degree [MFA] and field of study [directing, drama, acting, etc.]).

It does complicate queries, it's true. Ideally everyone would be linked to the school they graduated from. That said, it's useful to be able to say that someone graduated from Yale University, even if you don't know which school they attended.

According to the information I glanced over, that motto is the "underground" motto of Reed College, and not necessarily the official one (although it appears on Reed College merchandise). Additionally, according to Wikipedia, "Capitalism, Avarism, and Free Beer" was another motto introduced in the 1980s, but never became more popular than "Communism, Atheism, Free Love". If you know if Reed College has an official motto, or any other mottos, please feel free to add it.

According to Wikipedia, the phrase "University of Nevada" by itself usually refers to the "University of Nevada, Reno". I took a quick peek online, and all articles refering to Jim Vogt just say "University of Nevada"; I'm tempted to just say that we should delete both this topic and the education CVT that links it to Jim Vogt unless or until we can get some clarity. But I don't think we can safely merge this with UNLV.

The ambiguity of postal codes is definitely a potential problem, and it is compounded by the fact that we currently require an extra step to add the country to an address, which means that many zip codes will not have countries associated with them since some users will surely omit that step. But I doubt that the underlying problem will be resolved soon, unfortunately.

Yes, I'd noticed this through hand-entering UK postal code info: at the moment postal codes are mostly created via addresses, & as you say the current address UI doesn't let you input the country. It would be good to improve the address UI before too many postal codes are entered like this. I don't know the extent to which postal codes are potentially ambiguous in an international context, but they might be annoying data to subsquently untangle.
