That reminds me, the Yankees at one point had a mascot named "Dandy", from the song "Yankee Doodle Dandy".

As for the general idea of using songs and poems...I second it! The Love Songs of J. Alfred Prufrock vs. The Roads Not Taken! Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night vs. When I Have Fears that I May Cease to Be! The victories would be profound. Best of all, post-game riots would be replaced by intense debates on literary symbolism. :)

I think the real problem here is that this topic is not about the animal, but rather a musical adaptation of a Rilke poem. But wouldn't it be delightful if schools did adopt musical compositions or poems as their mascots? Imagine the rivalries! The Drunkboats vs. the Tintern Abbies! The Odes to Joy vs. the Messiahs! and the cheers would practically write themselves.

(Come to think of it, Baltimore has already started the trend. Go Ravens!)

I agree -- a mascot is more than just the type of animal/object; it's a specific instance of it. It wouldn't be correct to say that UC Berkeley's school mascot is the bear -- it's Oski the Bear.

Each of the schools listed to have a panther as their school mascot ought to have a topic each for their own panther with its image, description, history, etc.
