Tom --

I think I've found the root problem. On 2008-10-24, the two Ray Charles were merged:

http://tinyurl.com/yjdg8a9

Unfortunately, bad merges muck everything up -- all bets are off after they happen.

Again, the full fix is really to do the split/merge on the two entities to straighten them all out. Bryan's tool will let us do this. We'll use it as a test case when it's ready.

I didn't see Viral's response, but I'm not inclined to blame the lusers for all this yet. Perhaps it's not the recon pipeline, but something is seriously wrong.

the article is about a guy b. 1918

the structured data says b. 1930

all the photos are of a blind black piano player

the NYT link points to a dead black guy b. 1930

there are two IMDB links one the same topic for two apparently different guys, one b. 1919, the other b. 1930

the Wikipedia key matches the article, not the structured data, and is about a composer b. 1918

the Discogs link matches the structured data, not the article and is about a soul piano player b. 1930

Since the suggest/search flyouts present the Wikpedia article, not the structured data, it's not surprising that that's what people base their decision on. Even if they are making the wrong choices, it may be unavoidable based on what they are seeing (just the article).

The bulk of the structured data seems to refer to the blind piano player, while the article, Wikipedia key, and one IMDB key refers to the other guy. Has it really been like this for all time? If it wasn't a case of the Wikipedia articles/keys getting swapped, I'm at a lost to explain how things went so wrong.

I think swapping the Wikipedia keys & articles back will fix most of the problem, but I don't really have time to review all the property values.

OK, posting works. I don't know why neither Viral's or my responses haven't shown up here -- but in any case, apologies for the delay.

According to the wikipedia recon pipeline and the keys attached to these articles, there hasn't been any swapping between the two topics. The entanglement appears to be strictly from users mistakenly picking the wrong Ray Charles from freebase-suggest.

In any case, the only fix appears to be a manual split/merge of individual links between the two topics. Bryan has a tool for this that is almost ready for release; I'll check in with him ...
