Now a part of Malibu Creek State Park, the Century Movie Ranch was purchased in 1946 by 20th Century Fox for outdoor shooting. Sold to the state of California in 1974, it was opened as a recreational area in 1976 feature films, such as Pleasantville (1998) continue to be filmed here. Fox bought the park, along with some adjoining properties, in 1946 after using the area for filming How Green Was My Valley in 1941. The ranch was used for many movies and TV shows, it was the permanent base for the exteriors for M*A*S*H, and was used in the Planet of the Apes movies.
