Born at Breda in the Netherlands on 20 January 1651, the third child and eldest son of Charles Wheler, a colonel in the Life Guards, and his wife, Anne, daughter of John Hutchin of Egerton, Kent, who were royalists living in exile. Noted for his description of his travels in Greece, and especially the Acropolis in 1675/6 with Dr Jacques Spon, and his description of the Acropolis complex prior to the destructive attempt of the Venetians to take Athens are very important. He and his wife had had eighteen children, of whom two sons and six daughters were alive in 1723. [ - ]
