Abarsis en
Abarsis, called Stepson, Slaughter Priest, Man of the God, is a continuing character in The Sacred Band of Stepsons universe. A eunuch whose life was saved as a boy by Tempus, Abarsis first appears in the Thieves' World fictional universe in Janet Morris's widely-anthologized 1981 story, "A Man and His God," wherein Abarsis brings his Sacred Band to Tempus and is killed in battle. After Abarsis's death, Tempus's mercenaries prevail on their commander to name their unit "Stepsons" in the slain fighter's honor. After death, Abarsis becomes the "patron shade of the Sacred Band of Stepsons," manifesting at funerary pyres to take Tempus's slain warriors to the afterlife. As "messenger of the gods," Abarsis delivers prophecy, warning, and direction from the storm gods to Tempus and the leadership of the Sacred Band of Stepsons. In Soul of the City (1986), Abarsis saves Niko from demons and takes Janni's soul to its final rest. In the Sacred Band (2010), Abarsis manifests in the flesh only infrequently and in the direst of circumstances, and his coming is considered an omen of great import by Tempus and his forces. [ - ]
