This event marked the beginnings of modern geology and established Playfair, already a friend of Hutton, as an early disciple of geological 'uniformitarianism.' In 1795 Playfair published his principal mathematical work, 'Elements of Geometry', a presentation of the first six books of Euclid with much additional material, including his own axiom for linear parallelism (considering Euclid's unsatisfactory) - "that two straight lines, which intersect one another, cannot be both parallel to the same straight line" - which is now known as "Playfair's axiom". en
