The Sacred Band of Thebes is a military unit represented in fiction in the Sacred Band of Stepsons fictional universe and based on the historical Sacred Band of Thebes. In the Sacred Band of Stepsons fictional universe, the forty-six members of the Sacred Band of Thebes (those whose bones were not buried in the unit's mass grave at Chaeronea) are rescued by the legendary Tempus and his Sacred Band of Stepsons. Those forty-six Thebans live to fight on other days as part of The Sacred Band of Stepsons. Tempus takes the twenty-three pairs of Theban Sacred Banders first to Lemuria and then to Sanctuary to train. The Theban patron goddess, Harmonia, and the Greek Fates come following after, into a land where where myth is reality, theomachy reigns, and preternatural powers mix in mortal affairs. Integrated into Tempus's cavalry forces as prodromoi, the survivors of the Sacred Band of Thebes fight the battle of their dreams where sorcery is real, supernatural powers take sides, ghosts take the field -- and an army can fight the same battle twice.
