<p>"Elfenlied" ("Elf Song") is a poem written in German by Eduard Mörike that was adapted into a lied by Hugo Wolf.
^1 The German word Elfe also means "eleven", as in "wohl um die Elfe" ("just at eleven").
^2 Silpelit is a character from Mörike's masterpiece, "Eduard auf dem Seil" ("Edward on the Ropes").
The poem is a direct inspiration for Elfen Lied, a Japanese manga—and concurrently anime—series created by Lynn Okamoto. A sung version of "Elfenlied" appears in the manga. Also, the term "Silpelit" is used in the series to describe a category of Diclonius, which refers to an evolved subspecies of humans to which the main character belongs.</p>
