Description
  • The Sacred Band of Stepsons is a military unit and military organization in the Sacred Band of Stepsons universe and the Thieves' World shared fictional universe. Commanded by the legendary Tempus, called the Riddler, an immortalized favorite of the storm god of the armies, the Sacred Band of Stepsons cavalry began with a core of ten pairs of Sacred Band fighters and thirty single mercenaries. The unit called itself "Stepsons" after Abarsis, whose war-name was Stepson and who was killed in the unit's first engagement under Tempus's command. Over a series of eight novels and eleven stories, the Sacred Band of Stepsons grew into a battalion that included combined arms fighters from several other units, notably the 3rd Commando, a previous unit of Tempus's devising, famous for its brutality, and the historical Sacred Band of Thebes. When Tempus and his sister-in-arms Cime acquired Lemuria as its base of operations, the unit found itself able to fight anywhere in place and time due to Lemuria's numinous mysteries and its ability to confer "abeyance" upon its residents: while quartered on Lemuria, time does not pass for the Sacred Band of Stepsons. The Band meets its greatest test in the novel "The Sacred Band" (Morris, Morris; 2010), when Tempus and the demiurge Askelon of Meridian go to war.
