In the Thieves' World fictional shared universe and the Sacred Band of Stepsons universe, the Sanctuary City Guard is a company commanded by the Rankan-trained garrison commander Walegrin after the Rankan garrison forces withdraw from Sanctuary. Under-manned, the Sanctuary City Guard is buttressed by Sanctuary's oligarchs with the mercenary warlord Tempus's mercenaries, including the Sacred Band of Stepsons and his newly-acquired twenty-three pairs from the Sacred Band of Thebes. Both units act independently however, the Sanctuary City Guard remaining under Walegrin's command and inter-operating with Tempus's shock troops only when strictly necessary. [ - ]
