Optically-activated Microfluidic Chip en
A multidisciplinary team of Stanford inventors is developing a high resolution retinal prosthesis to restore sight in patients with Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) by communicating directly with retinal neurons. This invention is a micropatterned chip with fluid-containing-pixels. The release of fluid from the pixels is controlled by the amount of light received by an optical control. This microfluidic chip can be used to selectively stimulate retinal neurons with neurotransmitters. The technology was designed for a retinal prosthesis, but the invention could also be applied to the treatment of a variety of neurological disorders. [ - ]
