  • Stanford researchers have developed a method for imaging muscle sarcomeres using minimally invasive optical microendoscopy. The technique permits in vivo characterization of sarcomere length changes that occur with alterations in body posture and visualization of local variations in sarcomere length. High-speed data acquisition enables observation of sarcomere contractile dynamics with millisecond-scale resolution. This in vivo imaging allows for a better understanding of how sarcomere performance varies with physical conditioning and physiological state. Using the imaging diagnostics can also reveal how neuromuscular diseases affect contractile dynamics.
