Stanford researchers in Electrical Engineering have developed a cantilever that incorporates a small resonator with reference fingers at the end of the cantilever to form a phase-sensitive diffraction grating. Under rapidly varying forces between the tip and the sample, the resonator deflects while the cantilever remains stationary. The resonator interacts with the surface non-resonantly while the cantilever body is driven on resonance. The driving force is out of phase with the deflection with little force on the cantilever beyond inertia. The gentle tapping on the surface makes this probe operable on soft samples. [ - ]
