Protected Places en
The protected sites domain is for all properties related to places and structures that are either protected in some manner (such as parks, national monuments, etc.) or that have been designated as important natural, cultural, or historical sites (such as historic landmarks, preserved buildings, etc.).We are starting this domain by including data about national parks, World Heritage Sites, since this information is readily available from Wikipedia infoboxes, but we would also like to include protected sites of more local interest, such as city and county parks and buildings with local landmark status. What are Types? Types
| Governing Body of Protected Sites | /protected_sites/governing_body_of_protected_sites | 1 | 45 |
This can be any type of government agency, non-profit organization, company, etc. that administers a park or other protected site. |
| IUCN Category | /protected_sites/iucn_category | 1 | 7 |
The World Conservation Union or International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) is an international organization dedicated to natural resource conservation. They have defined several categories of protected area management. |
| Listed Site | /protected_sites/listed_site | 1 | 42,429 |
A "listed site" is any location that has been designated as being of particular historical, cultural, or natural value or interest. Well-known categories of listings include World Heritage sites, the National Register of Historic Places in the U. S., and Listed Buildings in the U. K., although there are many places that have various local landmark designations, and we would like to include those as well. Such a listing may or may not confer legal protections on the designated site. This type is distinct from "protected sites", which are guaranteed legal protection of some sort by their status. However, many such places will be both, and should be co-typed accordingly. |
| Natural or Cultural Preservation Agency | /protected_sites/natural_or_cultural_preservation_agency | 1 | 21 |
A "natural or cultural preservation agency" is an organization which designates sites as being of natural, cultural, or historical value. An example is the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which designates places around the world as World Heritage Sites. This type of agency differs from a "governing body of protected sites" in that preservation agencies do not generally have any administrative control over the sites they designate. |
| Natural or Cultural Site Designation | /protected_sites/natural_or_cultural_site_designation | 3 | 41 |
Natural or Cultural Site Designations are set by Natural or Cultural Preservation Agencies to describe the types of sites they are preserving. A designation may have multiple categories underneath it, and/or may simply have listed sites directly under the designation. |
| Park System | /protected_sites/park_system | 1 | 22 |
A park system is a group of parks or other protected sites that are governered or considered as a whole; park systems often include parks that are located in multiple governmental jurisdictions. For example, in the United States, the National Park System includes parks, monuments, etc. in most states; regional park systems generally span several counties. However, all the parks in a given city, while under the control of the same agency, are not usually considered a park system. |
| Protected Site | /protected_sites/protected_site | 5 | 7,426 |
A "protected site" is any location that is protected under law, usually by being designated as a park, preserve, monument, etc., and which are usually under the control (at least in part) by some form of government agency. This most often will apply to areas of land or water, but may also apply to human-made structures. This type is distinct from "listed sites", which have been designated as significant, but may not have any legal protection thereby. However, many such places will be both, and should be co-typed accordingly. |
| Site Listing Category | /protected_sites/site_listing_category | 4 | 55 |
A Natural or Cultural Site Designation may have multiple categories into which listed sites are assigned. This type records these categories. |
What are Mediators? Mediators
