He received his M.D. from Stanford in 1984, his D.Phil. from Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar in 1980 and his B.S. in 1978 from Yale University. Fred has been a member of the faculty of UCSF since 1986 and is best known for his work on protein structure and the conformational basis of prion disease.
