The case against Christie was particularly controversial because of his involvement in an earlier trial where another tenant of Rillington Place, Timothy John Evans, had been found guilty of murder and was sentenced to death by hanging. Christie had provided important testimony against Evans where the latter was found guilty of murdering his baby daughter and was subsequently executed. It was later found out that Christie had been an active serial killer during the time Evans and his wife and daughter had lodged at the premises; Christie was definitively linked to the murder of six women (one of whom was his own wife) on the site.
