On December 24, 1999, a low formed about 240 nmi (440 km) southeast of Diego Garcia and moved westward. The disturbance was upgraded to tropical depression status on December 25, 1800 hours (UTC), and upgraded to moderate tropical storm intensity on December 26 and named Astride.
