On April 10, 2006 at about 17:30 local time, a fire swept through a consumer electronics fair in Victoria Park, Meerut, killing at least 60 people and injuring 150 others. The fire was said to have been caused by a short circuit.
The fire engulfed a tent about 100 metres long at the Brand India Fair, to which thousands of people had reportedly come to see the latest electronic gadgets. Police officers said that there was only one exit which was also an entry for the tent. In all, three giant tents were destroyed. Witnesses said they heard gas cylinders exploding. The army was called in to help with rescue efforts.
Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mulayam Singh Yadav announced a compensation of 2 lakh to the families of each victim killed, Rs. 50,000 to each of the seriously injured and Rs. 25,000 to each person having minor injuries . The Government of Uttar Pradesh also announced a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
