The 2M Group is an alliance of twelve local authorities representing two million residents living in the vicinity of Heathrow Airport near London. It was launched in January 2007 and is concerned about increased noise and air pollution from increased number of flights from the airport and changes to operating methods.
The group believes that the Government and the industry overstates the economic benefits of aviations and fails to measure the full environmental costs, that extra flights are in fact likely to lead to more noise, worsening air pollution and increased climate change emissions from aviation at a time that other sectors are expected to reduce theirs.
